Phil Collins was able to finish what he started and was credited with a



complete game and second baseman Lou Chiozza had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the



Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Braves 8 to 6 at Baker



Bowl.







Philadelphia came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning when they had



5 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Kiddo Davis who made the



crowd come alive when he doubled which was good for two runs. Boston had a



chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.







The victory went to Collins(15-14) who went the distance allowing 6 runs. Ben



Cantwell(8-9) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by



Philadelphia, allowing 11 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings.







'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Collins said,



'this was one of those times.'

The spectacular St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of



7 to 4 at Sportsman's Park.







St. Louis jumped on top to stay in the 5th inning plating an isolated run



utilizing 2 base hits. Pepper Martin lined a single. Martin stole second



with some aggressive base running. After an out was recorded, Frankie Frisch



came up and he ripped a base-knock scoring the run. St. Louis finished with



10 hits in the victory.







Bill Walker(13-5) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory.



Walker was helped out by Jesse Haines who recorded his 10th save. Tony



Freitas(6-14) was hit with the loss in relief. St. Louis scored big getting



4 runs off him in 3 innings.

Bill Lee pitched a 2 hitter at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs won in their



last at-bat beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 2 to 1.







The game was won by Chicago with a run in the 9th inning. Billy Jurges drew a



walk. Lee was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Stan Hack then



doubled resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and a raucous post-game



celebration by the home town fans. Chicago managed 7 in their victory.







The winning pitcher was Lee(14-10) who allowed 1 run for the game. Ralph



Birkofer(15-11) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 hits and 5 walks in 8



and 1/3 innings.
