Tommy Bridges shutout Boston while allowing the Detroit bullpen a day-off and
third baseman Marv Owen homered at Navin Field as the Detroit Tigers beat the
Boston Red Sox by the count of 2 to 0.

Bridges(15-15) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 7 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings. Detroit banged out 8 on the afternoon.

Fritz Ostermueller(10-9) was the losing pitcher. Detroit now has a record of
78-59. With the loss, Boston has a record of 7-3 lately, 79-59 overall.

Earl Averill hit a homerun as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Philadelphia
Athletics by a score of 4 to 3 at League Park.

Willis Hudlin(11-13) pitched a fine game. He went 8 and 2/3 innings
surrendering 10 hits and 2 walks. Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.

Hudlin got help from Bob Weiland who was credited with his 1st save. Bill
Dietrich(10-8) was charged with the loss. 'We just made a lot of mistakes,
mostly mental,' Connie Mack said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats
you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'
