Hank Johnson threw a complete game shutout as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 0 at Navin Field.

Johnson(6-4) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 9 hits and no walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA
from 4.72 to 4.41. Boston totaled 12 on the afternoon.

General Crowder(6-7) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 12 hits and 3 walks
in 8 innings. The winning ways continue for Boston. They now have a record
of 8-2 in recent days. Detroit has a record of 77-59 after the loss.

Johnny Broaca completed the game without help from the bullpen at Sportsman's
Park where the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Browns by the score of 9
to 2.

The St. Louis fans didn't appreciate the big day Lou Gehrig had. He delivered
a one-base hit in the 2nd inning, doubled clearing the bases in the 3rd
inning and ripped a solo home run (his 42nd of the season) in the 5th inning.
New York had a total of 13 hits for the game.

The victory went to Broaca(13-5) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Dick
Coffman(5-12) took the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6
runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

409 fans were treated to a fine game at Sportsman's Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Browns won by the
slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

The St. Louis fans enjoyed the offense provided by Bruce Campbell. He rifled
a three-run blast (his 11th of the season) in the 1st inning and slapped a
base-hit knocking in a run in the 6th inning. New York had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.

Bump Hadley(9-16) allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jim Walkup gained credit for his 1st save. Johnny Allen(5-3)
suffered the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 5
and 2/3 innings.

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Hadley said.

Mel Harder shutout Philadelphia while allowing the Cleveland bullpen a day-off
at League Park as the Cleveland Indians beat the Philadelphia Athletics in 10
innings by the count of 1 to 0.

Neither team managed to score in the first nine innings. Cleveland came out
on top in the 10th inning. Johnny Burnett banged out a single. Willie Kamm
stepped into the batter's box and he laced a single. After an out was
recorded, Moe Berg stepped in and he lined a base-hit giving Cleveland the
win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Cleveland rapped out 7
hits for the afternoon.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Harder(13-8). Joe Cascarella(7-11) was
hit with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 and 1/3 innings.

Ted Lyons allowed Jimmy Dykes to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and
Jackie Hayes hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox beat the
Washington Nationals by a score of 6 to 5.

Hayes had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning, smashed a
two-run homer (his 2nd of the season) in the 4th inning and stroked a single
in the 6th inning. Chicago finished with 13 hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Lyons(6-13) who went the whole way allowing 5 runs.
Earl Whitehill(15-13) was tagged with the loss. With this win, Chicago has a
51-83 record. They have been 4-6 lately. Not able to get much going in
recent weeks, Washington is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of
64-71.
