Pete Fox went deep and had 2 RBI and Schoolboy Rowe went 9 strong innings as







the Detroit Tigers outscored the Washington Nationals 8 to 2.















Detroit tallied 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning when they had 4 base hits.







That was all the runs Rowe(16-6) needed. Detroit provided plenty of action







in the 3rd inning with 3 runs on 4 hits. Detroit finished with 20 hits in







the victory.















Monte Weaver(9-10) was the loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving







up 8 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'Rowe just dominated us' losing pitcher

at-bat was provided by Tony Lazzeri who made the home-town crowd a happy







bunch when he lined a base-hit which was good for two runs. New York rapped

Hoag who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled plating two runs.

Broaca(11-4) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. The loss was charged







to Thornton Lee(2-3). He was unable to control the New York offense and

12,351 fans watched an exciting game at Shibe Park. The Philadelphia







Athletics topped the St. Louis Browns by the slimmest of margins, 3 to







2.















Philadelphia had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning. The







critical plate appearance was by Ed Coleman who thrilled the crowd when he







laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs. St. Louis had a chance to







come back in the 9th but they came up short.















The victory went to Al Benton(10-10) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2







runs. Sugar Cain recorded the save, his 1st. Dick Coffman(4-10) was tagged







with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in







his 7 innings of work.















'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Benton, 'I was







just giving us a chance to win.'

Johnny Marcum pitched a complete game shutout as the Philadelphia Athletics







beat the St. Louis Browns by a score of 1 to 0.















Marcum(13-7) was very good in the win. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits







and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.47 to 4.26. St. Louis







threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.















The losing pitcher was Bobo Newsom(12-7). He pitched 7 innings and







surrendered just 3 hits and 2 walks. The winning ways continue for







Philadelphia. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Still in a bad
