Bobby Burke tossed a complete game as the Washington Nationals defeated the

Detroit Tigers by a score of 3 to 1 at Griffith Stadium.



Detroit lost it in the 8th inning when Washington did all their damage with 3

runs utilizing 4 base hits. Pete Susko kicked off the action when he

tripled. Ossie Bluege stepped up to the plate and he tripled which scored a

run. Burke then smacked a single driving in one more runner. Buddy Myer was

up next and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Washington had

only 6 hits for the game.



Burke(7-4) allowed 1 run on the game. Tommy Bridges(11-15) ended up with the

loss. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.

Moose Solters lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI and Johnny Welch

completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Boston Red Sox

defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 6 to 2 at Fenway Park.



The game started off with Boston taking the lead in the first scoring 2

runners on 1 hit. The key offensive moment was provided by Solters who made

the crowd happy when he smashed a two-run homer (his 5th of the season).

Boston totaled 9 on the afternoon.



The victory was credited to Welch(10-7) who went the distance, allowing 2

runs. Ted Lyons(5-12) was the loser. 'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed.

Man alive, things were getting awfully grim,' noted Bucky Harris. 'Now, we

need to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!'

Willis Hudlin was able to finish what he started and was credited with a

complete game as the Cleveland Indians defeated the New York Yankees 3 to 2

at Yankee Stadium.



Cleveland scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning with 3 runs using

4 hits. Hal Trosky led off and started the rally when he delivered a

one-base hit. Odell Hale stepped into the batter's box and he laced a

base-hit. Johnny Burnett got his chance to keep things going, but he went

down on strikes. Billy Knickerbocker stepped in and he doubled plating a

run. Frankie Pytlak stepped into the box and delivered a single as two more

runners crossed the plate. New York made it exciting in the 9th, but they

were unable to push the needed runs across.



Hudlin(8-12), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Red

Ruffing(10-11) was hit with the loss. He gave up only 4 hits and 3 walks in

9 innings.



Joe McCarthy was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really

hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is

easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely

get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

Right fielder Bruce Campbell had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Bobo Newsom went

the distance at Shibe Park where the St. Louis Browns beat the Philadelphia

Athletics by the score of 5 to 2.



Newsom(12-6) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 7 hits and 5 walks in 9

innings. Both teams totaled 7 on the afternoon.



Joe Cascarella(7-8) was charged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits
