started and was credited with a complete game as the Boston Braves outscored



the Brooklyn Dodgers 7 to 2.







Frankhouse(11-12) looked very much in control throughout the day. He



surrendered only 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Boston had a total of 17



hits for the game.







Tom Zachary(3-8) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 10 hits

Ray Benge shut down the Boston batters on just 1 hit as the Brooklyn Dodgers



pulled out a win over the Boston Braves by a score of 2 to 0 at Ebbetts



Field.







Brooklyn erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs



using 2 hits. Sam Leslie kicked off the action when he doubled. After an



out was recorded, Len Koenecke came to the plate and smashed a two-run homer



(his 10th of the season) giving Brooklyn the victory as 6,749 happy fans



celebrated wildly. Brooklyn banged out 7 on the afternoon.







Benge(11-10) went the distance for the shutout. Huck Betts(6-9) was the loser.



He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk in 8 and 1/3 innings. 'I thought it was my



best performance in a long time,' said Benge. 'I had good command early in



the game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.'

Center fielder Chick Hafey left the yard and had 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the



Cincinnati Reds staged a comeback win over the Chicago Cubs by the count of 5



to 4.







Cincinnati had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs



using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Adam Comorosky began the Cincinnati



spurt when he doubled. Harlin Pool was next and he tripled resulting in a



run. Alex Kampouris then stroked a single scoring the final run of the



inning. Although they lost, Chicago did out-hit Cincinnati 14 to 11.







Ray Kolp(3-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Don Brennan earned



his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Bud Tinning(5-5) in relief. He



surrendered 2 runs and 3 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.







Tinning was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get



away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One



minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I



get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

Lon Warneke pitched a complete game at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs beat



the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 2.







Chicago had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning when they



tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. Both teams totaled 8 on the afternoon.







Warneke(16-6) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The loss was



charged to Benny Frey(4-12). He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits



and 3 walks.

Dolph Camilli hit one over the fence and Phil Collins went the distance at



Baker Bowl as the Philadelphia Phillies won in their last at-bat beating the



New York Giants by the count of 2 to 1.







The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Bucky Walters singled.



Al Todd was the next batter, but he struck out. After another out, Dick



Bartell came to the plate and lined a one-base hit. Lou Chiozza was up next



and he doubled making Philadelphia the victor and beginning a joyous home



town celebration. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the



6th inning.







Collins(11-8) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Dolf Luque(0-4)



suffered the loss in relief. Philadelphia now has a record of 44-59. With



the loss, New York has a record of 6-4 lately, 65-39 overall.

Pepper Martin cracked a homer and scored 3 times as the St. Louis Cardinals



defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 5 at Sportsman's Park.







St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 4



runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Rip Collins who made the home-town



crowd a happy bunch when he bombed a two-run dinger (his 28th of the season).



St. Louis ended up with 16 hits for the game while Pittsburgh had 12.







Paul Dean(9-6) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. Bill Swift(6-8) was



the loser. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings.

Fred Lindstrom had 2 base hits and Waite Hoyt pitched a complete game as the



Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 3 at



Sportsman's Park.







Pittsburgh scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.



After two were out Tommy Thevenow kicked off the action when he stroked a



one-base hit. Cookie Lavagetto came next and he doubled, and an error was



also committed, plating two runs. Pittsburgh had 11 hits for the afternoon.







Hoyt(8-8) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Dazzy



Vance(3-5) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 4 hits in



3 and 1/3 innings.







'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully



grim,' noted Pie Traynor. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together



and turn things around!'
