Al Simmons had 4 hits at Navin Field as the Chicago White Sox came back



dramatically to top the Detroit Tigers by the score of 6 to 4.







Chicago had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3



hits. Simmons got things going when he ripped a base-knock. Zeke Bonura



stepped into the batter's box and he laced a one-base hit. Luke Appling then



drew a walk to load the bases. Jimmy Dykes was up next and he drew a walk



which plated a run. Marty Hopkins stepped into the box and worked the



squeeze play to perfection scoring one more run. Frenchy Uhalt joined his



teammates in the uprising and laced a single scoring the final run of the



inning. Chicago and Detroit each finished the afternoon with 12 hits.







Phil Gallivan(2-7) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.



Tommy Bridges(10-12) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11



hits and 6 walks in 8 innings.







Bridges was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get



away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One



minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I



get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

Lefty Gomez allowed Joe McCarthy to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game



as the New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 6



to 2 at Yankee Stadium.







New York claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on



5 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. New York banged out 14



on the afternoon.







The win went to Gomez(13-9) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Al Benton(8-8) was



the loser. He was knocked around by New York, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks



in 5 innings.







Joe McCarthy was very impressed with his pitcher, Gomez, 'He had unusually



good pitch placement this afternoon. It was almost unfair - but a beautiful



game to watch from where I sat'

Bobo Newsom went the distance and Jack Burns left the yard and had 2 RBI as



the St. Louis Browns ballclub embarrassed the Cleveland Indians by the count



of 13 to 2.







St. Louis took the lead for keeps in the top of the 3rd inning scoring 5



runners on 6 hits. That early run support was enough for Newsom(9-5) and St.



Louis. St. Louis lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when they had 5



runs on 6 hits and the 7th inning with 7 runs on 8 hits. St. Louis had a



total of 20 hits for the game.







Willis Hudlin(6-11) suffered the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 3 innings of



work.

Fritz Ostermueller tossed a complete game at Fenway Park where the streaking



Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 9 to 6.







It was a good day for Boston thanks to Bill Cissell. He smacked a single in



the 3rd inning, tripled scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning and slapped



a base-hit which was good for two runs in the 7th inning. Boston rapped out



11 hits for the afternoon.







Ostermueller(7-8) finished the game allowing 6 runs in the victory. Ed



Linke(3-2) was hit with the loss. He was unable to control the Boston



offense and allowed 9 hits and 7 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.







Boston won for the 9th straight time.

In a close game the Washington Nationals got by the Boston Red Sox by the



score of 5 to 3.







Washington had 4 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 5



hits. They would prove to be the difference in the contest. Overall



Washington out-hit Boston 12 to 9.







The victory was credited to Tommy Thomas(6-5) who went 8 and 1/3 innings,



allowing 3 runs. Bobby Burke got the save, his 3rd. Gordon Rhodes(10-11)
