The Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 2 at

League Park.



Cleveland took the lead for good in the bottom of the 7th inning when they

tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th

inning.



The win went to Thornton Lee(1-2) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. The losing

pitcher was Schoolboy Rowe(11-5) in relief. He allowed Cleveland 5 runs in 3

innings of work.

Bob Weiland shutout Detroit while allowing the Cleveland bullpen a day-off as

the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers in 11 innings by a score of 1

to 0.



Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Cleveland was victorious in

the 11th inning. Johnny Burnett stroked a one-base hit. After an out was

recorded, Tommy Bridges came up and he let one slip out of his hand for a

wild pitch. Glenn Myatt then doubled making Cleveland the winners and

sending the 4,871 fans home happy. Cleveland had 13 hits for the afternoon.



Weiland(9-5) went the distance for the shutout. Bridges(10-11) took the loss.

He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 2 walks in 10 and 1/3 innings.



With this win, Cleveland has a 47-49 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With

this loss, Detroit has a 5-5 record of late, 56-41 overall.

Billy Werber had 4 hits as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees by

The Boston Red Sox nipped the ice-cold New York Yankees in 11 innings 6 to 5

at Yankee Stadium in a hard fought contest.



The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Boston won it in the 11th

inning. Roy Johnson delivered a solo blast (his 4th of the season). Boston

totaled 10 on the afternoon.



Herb Pennock(4-1) allowed 2 runs in 4 innings, and picked up the victory. Russ

Van Atta(2-10) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 2

and 2/3 innings.

The St. Louis Browns pitchers essentially took the day off at Sportsman's Park

as the Chicago White Sox offense erupted for 10 runs while Sam Jones(8-10),

with relief help from Phil Gallivan, held St. Louis to 1 run.



Chicago jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner.

Chicago ended up with 15 hits for the game while St. Louis had 8.



George Blaeholder(7-11) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many

baserunners giving up 9 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Alex McColl allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard

for Philadelphia at Shibe Park where the Washington Nationals beat the

Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 1 to 0.



McColl(5-1) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was stingy on

the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA

from 4.95 to 4.04. Washington had only 5 hits for the game.



Johnny Marcum(10-7) was given the loss. He was stingy with the baserunners,

allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.



With this win, Washington has a 52-45 record. They have been 4-6 lately.

With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 52-41.
