NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 American League Date: 7/20/1934

BOSTON AT CLEVELAND

Red Sox......... 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 010 - 12 15 0

Indians......... 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 2 7 1

Win:Ostermueller(4-8) Loss:Hudlin(5-8)

Fritz Ostermueller allowed Bucky Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a

complete game and Eddie Morgan had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at League Park as

the Boston Red Sox embarrassed the Cleveland Indians by the lopsided score of

12 to 2.

A hugely decisive outburst by Boston in the 9th inning quieted any Cleveland

hopes for a victory when they blasted Cleveland for 10 runs on 8 hits. The

highlight belonged to Moose Solters who quieted the crowd when he slapped a

base-hit bringing in two baserunners. Boston rapped out 15 hits for the

afternoon.

The victory went to Ostermueller(4-8) who went the distance allowing 2 runs.

The loss was charged to Willis Hudlin(5-8). His ERA ballooned from 3.83 to

4.18 as he allowed 8 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.

NEW YORK AT CHICAGO

Homeruns- A.Simmons-2(9th)

Al Simmons launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Comiskey Park where the

Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees in 10 innings 10 to 9.

Both teams were tied at 9 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Chicago

pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Simmons tripled. Luke Appling was

next and he hit a sacrifice fly resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and

a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Chicago had 10 hits

for the afternoon.

The victory went to Joe Heving(2-1) who went 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing no

runs. Russ Van Atta(2-7) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run

and 1 hit in 1 inning.

WASHINGTON AT ST. LOUIS

Homeruns- B.Myer(2nd), J.Burns(8th)

The Washington Nationals nipped the St. Louis Browns 10 to 9 at Sportsman's

Park in a hard fought contest.

Washington erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning when they

scored 6 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Buddy Myer who disappointed

the partisan crowd when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand

Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season). St. Louis had a chance to come back in

the 9th but they came up short.

Alex McColl(4-1) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. McColl got relief

help from Ray Prim who gained credit for his 1st save. Bill McAfee(2-2) was

tagged with the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and

did not allow an earned run in the game.
