3,280 fans watched an exciting game at Braves Field. The Boston Braves topped
the Chicago Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Fred Frankhouse(9-9) gave Boston a solid outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 3
walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Chicago threatened in the 9th but Boston was
able to put down the rally.

Bob Smith earned the save, his 5th. Lon Warneke(13-4) was the loser. He gave
up 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.

Paul Derringer tossed a complete game and Tony Piet collected 2 extra-base
hits and had 2 RBI at Ebbetts Field as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Brooklyn
Dodgers by the count of 8 to 2.

Cincinnati came up with 4 runs in the top of the 4th inning when they had 5
base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Ernie Lombardi who quieted the
home crowd when he lashed a single scoring two baserunners. Cincinnati
managed 17 in their victory.

Derringer(6-9) allowed 2 runs on the game. Van Lingle Mungo(9-11) was tagged
with the loss. Bob O'Farrell was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a
bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now
maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are
capable.'

Tony Freitas had 2 base hits and 4 RBI and he hurled a fine complete game
shutout as the Cincinnati Reds ballclub embarrassed the Brooklyn Dodgers by
the count of 11 to 0.

Freitas(2-6) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 9 hits and no walks in 9
innings. Cincinnati had 16 hits for the afternoon. Boom-Boom Beck(3-5) was
given the loss.

Travis Jackson had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the New York Giants defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings by the score of 2 to 1 at Polo Grounds.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. New York came out the
victor in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Mel Ott banged out a
single. Jackson next to the plate and he doubled giving New York the victory
as 12,095 happy fans celebrated wildly. New York had 9 hits overall, while
Pittsburgh had 6.

Jack Salveson(6-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Larry French(9-7) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 2 runs and
9 hits in 10 and 1/3 innings.

Arky Vaughan had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic
fashion over the New York Giants by a score of 7 to 6 at Polo
Grounds.

Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Lloyd Waner began the
rally when he delivered a base-hit. Paul Waner was next and he tripled
scoring a run. One out later, Vaughan stepped in and he laced a single
scoring the final run of the inning. Pittsburgh out-hit New York for the
game, 12 hits to 8.

The victory went to Leon Chagnon(3-1) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no
runs. Hal Smith was credited with his 1st save. Carl Hubbell(13-5) was the
loser. He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and allowed 12 hits
and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Vaughan said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'

Cy Moore went the distance and Lou Chiozza had 2 base hits as the Philadelphia
Phillies topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 2 to 1 at Baker
Bowl.

In the 3rd inning Philadelphia scored 1 run. That early scoring was all that
Moore(2-6) needed. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.

The loss was charged to Paul Dean(7-5). He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks in
8 innings. Philadelphia now has a record of 35-44. With the loss, the St.
Louis ballclub's record is 44-32.

One run was the difference at Baker Bowl as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 6.

Philadelphia took the lead off Bill Hallahan in the first inning as they
scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. Curt Davis(8-7) got relief help from George
Darrow who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 2nd save.

The losing pitcher was Hallahan(5-6). He allowed 12 hits and 4 walks in 4 and
2/3 innings. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Davis, 'I
got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that
matters.'
