Second baseman Gordon Slade had 3 base hits at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati
Reds beat the Boston Braves 4 to 2.
Cincinnati tallied 3 runs in the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. The
critical plate appearance was by Linc Blakely who brought the crowd to their
feet when he laced a base-knock which was good for two runs. Despite losing,
Boston out-hit Cincinnati 9 to 6.
Tony Freitas(1-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Allyn Stout earned the save, his 1st. The loss was charged
to Fred Frankhouse(7-7).

In a tight game it was the New York Giants 6, the St. Louis Cardinals 4 at
Sportsman's Park.
Al Smith(2-2) pitched well for New York in their victory. He went 8 and 1/3
innings allowing 8 hits and 4 walks. St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Hi Bell recorded the save, his 6th. Paul Dean(6-4) took the loss. He gave up
9 hits and no walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'I always am most impressed when a
pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Bill Terry said
after the game. 'Smith did not have command of his pitches most of the
afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'

Field as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count
of 5 to 4.
Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 2
runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Bucky Walters keyed the rally
when he reached on an error. Irv Jeffries stepped up next and he lined a
one-base hit. Collins followed, but he was set down on strikes. Kiddo Davis
stepped in and he stroked a single bringing in a run. Bartell came to the
plate and lined a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Philadelphia
totaled 12 on the afternoon.
Collins(7-5) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Ralph Birkofer(4-7). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 3

Win:Hansen(3-4) Loss:Hoyt(4-6) Save:Johnson(1st)
In a dramatic ending the Philadelphia Phillies staged a comeback and held on
to win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 8 to 6.
Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning when they
scored 5 runs on 7 hits. The key at-bat was by Kiddo Davis who deflated the
mood of the partisan fans when he singled which was good for two runs.
Philadelphia had 17 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 12.
The victory went to Snipe Hansen(3-4) who went 2 innings, allowing 1 run.
Hansen got help from Syl Johnson who earned his 1st save. Waite Hoyt(4-6)
was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 1
inning.
Hoyt was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away.
What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One minute
things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I get a
chance to redeem myself real soon!'
