Second baseman Lou Chiozza had 4 hits at Baker Bowl where the seemingly



unstoppable Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Braves 7 to 4.







In the 5th inning Philadelphia scored 5 runs with the help of 4 hits. The



crucial at-bat was provided by Kiddo Davis who made the Philadelphia fans a



happy lot when he lined a one-base hit plating two runs. Boston threatened



in the 9th but their rally came up short.







Ed Holley(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and



allowing 3 runs. Holley got relief help from Syl Johnson who gained credit



for his 2nd save. Bob Brown(1-4) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to



control the Philadelphia offense and allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.







Philadelphia continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7 games



and counting.

St. Louis Cardinals won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Cincinnati Reds at



Sportsman's Park pulling it out in their last at bats, 5 to 4.







St. Louis scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Rip



Collins delivered a solo blast (his 21st of the season) making St. Louis the



victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Although they lost,



Cincinnati did out-hit St. Louis 14 to 6.







The win was credited to Dazzy Vance(3-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing



no runs. Allyn Stout(1-4) was charged with the loss in relief.

Travis Jackson hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI as the New York Giants



defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 4 to 3 at Ebbetts Field.







The game was won by New York with a run in the 8th inning. After two outs Mel



Ott ripped a solo home run (his 19th of the season). New York totaled 9 on



the afternoon.







The winning pitcher was Hi Bell(1-2) who allowed no runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.



Van Lingle Mungo(9-10) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 9



innings.

In a two run game the red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates got by the Chicago Cubs by



the score of 5 to 3.







Pittsburgh took the lead off Guy Bush in the first inning when they tallied 3



runs on 3 hits. Pittsburgh had 9 hits for the afternoon while Chicago had 6.







The victory went to Waite Hoyt(5-6) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs. Hoyt



got help from Leon Chagnon who earned his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was



Bush(7-5).







Pittsburgh won for the 7th straight time. Pie Traynor held court after the



contest, 'Everything is coming up aces right now. It is important for our



team to ride this wave as long as we can. Every win is important.'
