May 22nd,1934 - NL Game Summaries

Giants Top Cards at Polo Grounds, 6-4
Little known Smith keeps Cards' bats quiet

In a close game it was the seemingly unstoppable New York Giants 6, the St.Louis Cardinals 4 at the Polo Grounds.


The Giants received strong pitching performances from starter Al Smith (pictured) and Fred Fitzsimmons,(5-3) who won the game with a masterful relief performance, replacing Hi Bell off whom the Cards had begun to hit. Fitzsimmons performed flawlessly in relief in his 1 and 1/3 innings.


New York managed 10 hits in their victory. Flint Rhem(1-2) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.


Pirates Top Phillies at Baker Bowl

Ralph Birkofer allowed Pittsburgh to rest its bullpen, tossing a complete game at the Baker Bowl where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 7 to 2.

Birkofer(3-3) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.42 to 3.94. Pittsburgh had a total of 14 hits for the game. George Darrow(0-2) was given the loss. With this win, Pittsburgh has a 14-13record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, Philadelphia has a record of 4-6 lately, 12-16 overall.


Boston Works 3-1 Win Over Reds at Home

At Braves Field, the Boston fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Huck Betts(2-4) finally bested his Cincinnati opposite, Paul Derringer (3-2), by the score of 3 to 1.


Boston did all of its offensive work in the 4th inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Pinky Whitney who came through for the home fans when he banged out a single scoring two base runners. Boston had only 6 hits for the game.

Betts got relief help from Tom Zachary who gained credit for his 1st save.The loss was charged to Derringer. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk.



Cubs Squeak Past Dodgers, 7-6
Cuyler has three hits, HR to lead visitors

Center fielder Kiki Cuyler connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Ebbetts Field as the Chicago Cubs pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 7 to 6.

Chicago came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Chuck Klein kicked off the action when he tripled. Cuyler was next to the plate and he was walked intentionally. Riggs Stephenson then stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run. Cubs skipper Charlie Grimm stepped in and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning.

Despite losing, Brooklyn out-hit Chicago 13 to 10. The winning pitcher was Pat Malone (4-2) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 2/3innings. Boom-Boom Beck(2-2) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 and 2/3 innings.
