Tigers Can't Get it Going; Lose to Nats 4-2
Whitehill earns win number 7 with 2 run performance

John Stone had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Earl Whitehill pitched a complete game as the Washington Nationals defeated the Detroit Tigers 4 to 2 at Navin Field. Whitehill (7-1) had a solid outing for Washington. He surrendered 9 hits and 2walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.64 to 3.42. The Detroit batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. Firpo Marberry(2-3) took the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 5 walks in 6 and1/3 innings.



A's Win Over Browns in 12, 8-7
McNair hits grand slam for A's

Shortstop Eric McNair ripped a bases loaded blast at Sportsman's Park as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns in 12 innings 8 to 7.

The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. Philadelphia won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Rabbit Warstler slapped a one-basehit. After an out was recorded, Bob Johnson stepped up to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. Jimmie Foxx then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Ed Coleman came up and he hit a deep fly scoring the run.

Philadelphia won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 16 hits to 9. Al Benton(3-1) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Bill McAfee(0-1)was hit with the loss in relief. His ERA increased from 3.48 to 3.97 as he allowed 1 run in 1 inning. Philadelphia now has a record of a league leading 18-11. With the loss St. Louis now has a record of 8-18, worst in the league.



Yankees Rally for Win in 9th
5 run inning breaks deadlock for Bombers

Lou Gehrig went deep and had 4 RBI as the New York Yankees topped theCleveland Indians by a score of 9 to 4 at League Park.

New York came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 5 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Gehrig who silenced League Parkas he delivered a single bringing in two baserunners. New York had 10 hits for the afternoon.

The win went to Jimmie Deshong(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Willis Hudlin(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 2 walks.



Red Sox Win at Comiskey on Werber's Bat
BoSox third sacker goes yard twice; Pennock picks up 4th save

Billy Werber slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Comiskey Park where the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 7 to 3.

Werber provided the offensive punch. He hit a single in the 1st inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 7th inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 5th of the season) in the 9th inning. Boston had 10 hits for theafternoon.

Gordon Rhodes(3-5) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Herb Pennock got the save, his 4th. Phil Gallivan(0-2) was given the loss.
