Jim Mooney(1-0) and Ben Cantwell(1-1) locked horns in a pitcher's duel withMooney and the blistering-hot St. Louis Cardinals coming out on top of the struggling Boston Braves 2 to 0. St. Louis scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Bill Delancey who electrified Sportsman's Park when he doubled scoring two base runners. Mooney got help from Jesse Haines who pitched great and earned his 2nd save. St. Louis extended their winning streak to 8 games.

In a freak accident prior to the game's commencement, Cardinal pitcher Bill Walker was beaned while throwing batting practice to Joe Medwick. Team doctors say that the injuries appear fairly serious, and Walker could miss several months of the season.






Jeffries Blasts Two at Wrigley to Give Phils Series Win Over Cubs

Philadelphia second baseman Irv Jeffries (pictured) cracked 2 home runs and had 5 RBI and Phil Collins went the distance as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs bythe score of 11 to 8 at Wrigley Field. Jeffries was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 3rd of the season) in the 5th inning. Philadelphia rapped out 16 hits for the afternoon. Collins (2-2) got the victory, allowing 8 runs for the game. Lynn Nelson (0-1)was the loser. Philadelphia scored big getting 5 runs off him in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Mark Koenig had 3 base hits at Crosley Field where the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Giants 3 to 2. The first 2 Reds runs came on a two run homer by backstop Ernie Lombardi (pictured). Lombardi followed up by saving a run when he blocked the plate in the 6th. Cincinnati won the game with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning when Chick Hafey blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season). New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The win went to Joe Shaute(1-2) who allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. FredFitzsimmons(2-3) was the loser. He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.



Pittsburgh Nips Brooklyn in Rubber Game
6-5 win gives Bucs final game at Forbes

6,125 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field. The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5. The game was won by Pittsburgh with a run in the 8th inning. Leon Chagnonripped a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Paul Waner stepped in and helined a one-base hit scoring the run. Pittsburgh finished with 15 hits while Brooklyn ended up with 9. Chagnon (pictured) (2-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Waite Hoyt recorded the save, his 2nd. The losing pitcher was Van Lingle Mungo(2-4). By surrending 6 runs in 8 innings his ERA jumped from 3.92 to 4.40.

Moose Solters (pictured) hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated theDetroit Tigers by the score of 9 to 7 at Fenway Park. Boston scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning when they had 6 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Billy Werber who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled scoring two baserunners. LeftyGrove(1-0) got help from Herb Pennock, who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save. Pennock has yet to yield a run this year. Tommy Bridges (0-3) was given the loss. He allowed 13 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Browns Take Second Game of Series from Yankees

At Yankee Stadium the St. Louis Browns outscored the New York Yankees 4 to 1. St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. St. Louis had only 6 hits for the game, with two of them going to catcher Frank Grube (pictured), who also worked Gomez for a walk. Bobo Newsom (1-2) allowed 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Jack Knott earned his 1st save. Lefty Gomez (2-3) suffered the loss.He pitched 8 innings giving up 6 hits and 6 walks.

Joe Cascarella(1-0) and Lloyd Brown (0-2) locked horns in a pitcher's duel, with Cascarella and the Philadelphia Athletics coming out on top of the ClevelandIndians 2 to 1. Cascarella pitched a fine game. He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings, seeing his ERA drop from 4.50 to 2.81. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally. Al Benton recorded his 1st save. Philadelphia now has a record of 10-8. With the loss Cleveland now has a record of 7-8. The A's only got two hits on the afternoon. Their key to victory was a bad throwing error by Indians shortstop Billy Kickerbocker, which allowed a run to score from first and placed another Athletic on third, allowing Jimmy Foxx to drive him in with a deep flyout to right field.

In a lop-sided win the Chicago White Sox ripped the Washington Nationals by a 13 to 7 count. Whit Wyatt (2-0) was called upon to do the job in relief, and he was the winning pitcher. He was reached for 3 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings, lowering his ERAfrom 3.00 to 1.59. Chicago bats were hot in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits. Chicago simply wore out the Washington pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings. Shortstop Luke Appling was 4 for 6 for the Sox, raising his batting average to .475 for the year.

Earl Whitehill (4-1) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 14 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. The loss was Whitehill's first after 4 straight wins.

The Chicago White Sox have announced that manager Lew Fonseca will be replaced by infielder Jimmy Dykes. The White Sox are 7-7 at this point in the season in our replay (IRL they were 4-10 when Dykes replaced Fonseca.

Center fielder Ethan Allen (pictured) had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 3 to 1 at Wrigley Field. Ed Holley(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Philadelphia. He went 7 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 2 walks, improving his ERA from 7.71 to 4.41. Philadelphia finished with 8 hits while Chicago ended up with 5. George Darrow got the save, his 1st. Bill Lee(0-1) was given the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.

First baseman Bill Terry had 4 hits and Carl Hubbell (pictured) came through with a solid 9 innings as the New York Giants outscored the ice-cold Cincinnati Reds 6 to 0. Hubbell (5-0) was tremendous on the mound for New York. He allowed just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings. In fact, Hubbell has yet to issue a single walk in his 5 starts.


New York had 14 hits for the afternoon. Benny Frey (0-2) absorbed the loss. He allowed a few too many base runnersgiving up 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. 'All of my pitches were working today,' Hubbell said. 'I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'

Solid outing by French keeps Dodgers hitters quiet

Earl Grace homered and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 6 to 2. Larry French (2-1) (pictured) earned his pay with a solid performance for Pittsburgh. He went 8 innings surrendering 7 hits and 1 walk improving his ERA from 3.77 to3.44. For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Brooklyn 12 to 7. Waite Hoyt gained credit for his 1st save. Ray Benge(2-2) took the loss. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 11 hits and 1 walk.

Tex Carleton came through with a solid 9 innings and second baseman Frankie Frisch had 2 base hits as the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals outscored the slumping Boston Braves 1 to 0. St. Louis scored the only run of the game in the 5th inning. St. Louis managed 8 in their victory. Carleton (2-2) was credited with the shutout. Bob Brown(0-1) absorbed the loss. Boston manager Bill McKechnie was obviously impressed with the pitching of Carleton, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

Eddie Morgan had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 7 to 4. Boston started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of thefirst scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Max Bishop started the inning off rightwhen he drew a walk. Billy Werber stepped up to the plate and he delivered aone-base hit. Morgan then laced a base-knock which scored a run. RoyJohnson followed and he lined a base-hit scoring one more run. Carl Reynoldsstepped into the box and reached on an error scoring the final run of theinning. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to pushthe needed runs across. The victory was credited to Bob Weiland(3-2) who went 8 and 1/3 innings,allowing 4 runs. Weiland was helped out by Fritz Ostermueller who recordedhis 4th save. Vic Sorrell(1-2) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard,allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

4,968 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Washington Nationals won by theslimmest of margins, 4 to 3. Washington scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. After two were out JohnStone lined a single. Bob Boken stepped up next and he delivered a base-hit,and an error was also committed. Moe Berg then reached on an error scoringthe run. Overall Washington out-hit Chicago 11 to 8. Ed Linke(2-0) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. JoeHeving(1-1) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in8 innings.

The Philadelphia fans enjoyed the offense provided by Johnson. He laced a single in the 1st inning, blasted a two-run home run (his 5th of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled plating two runs in the 5th inning. Philadelphia had a total of 11 hits for the game. Cain (3-2) went the distance for the shutout. Mel Harder(2-1) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Lou Gehrig rocketed 2 home runs as the New York Yankees beat the St. LouisBrowns by a score of 9 to 4. Gehrig had a big day at the plate. He launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 8th of the season) in the 5th inning and doubled plating two runs in the 8th inning. New York totaled 9 on the afternoon. Johnny Allen (2-0) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Johnny Murphy earned the save, his 2nd. George Blaeholder (1-3) was the loser. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 4 innings. 'I felt great out there today,' Gehrig said, 'Maybe I should make a regular habit of getting to bed on time!'

NL Player of the Week - Paul Waner

Paul Waner (HA 9) was an outfielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1926 to 1940. From 1941 through his retirement in 1945, he also played for Brooklyn, Boston (NL) and New York (NL). Historian Bill James rates Waner's rookie season (1926) as the greatest by any right fielder.

Every year from his rookie season in 1926 until 1937, Waner was far above the league average in OPS. His lifetime BA/OPS/SLG is .333/.404/.473 (.326/.397/.461) neutralized. He won the MVP in 1927, when his team won the NL pennant, only to be annihilated by the 1927 ("murderer's row") New York Yankees in four straight games. He finished second in the 1934 MVP race to Dizzy Dean. He won the league batting title in 1927, 1934 and 1936.

Waner was well known his his ability to imbibe. He reportedly gave up alcohol at the request of Pirates' management in 1938, and proceeded to have the first year he hit below .300 in his career. Casey Stengel once quipped that his graceful slide came from his ability to avoid breaking the liquor bottle in his pocket. Also unsuccessful was an attempt to "improve" his hitting by correcting his nearsightedness with eyeglasses.

Waner was also strong in the field. According to one account, he had perhaps the finest arm in the Pittsburgh outfield until Roberto Clemente. Another interesting anecdote: Waner was only the sixth player to reach 3,000 hits. When his 3,000 appeared to come on a botched line drive, Waner signaled to the scorer that it should be ruled an error so his 3,000 would come on a clean hit.

Waner's brother, Lloyd, was also a long time member of the Pirates' outfield. Together, they were known as "Big Poison" (Paul) and "Little Poison" (Lloyd). Together, they are the answer to the question "which group of brothers had the most hits in major league baseball" as together Paul and Lloyd Waner (5,611) outpaced the Alous (5,094) and the DiMaggios (4,853).
