Win:Newsom(13-7) Loss:Burke(7-5)

Bobo Newsom pitched 9 strong innings as the St. Louis Browns outscored the

Washington Nationals 4 to 0.

St. Louis scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 3 runs using 2

hits. Alan Strange opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Newsom

came next and he stroked a base-hit. Harlond Clift then reached on an error

which scored a run. Sammy West followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.

One out later, Roy Pepper stepped in and he delivered a single with two more

runners crossing home. Both teams totaled 4 on the afternoon.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Newsom(13-7). Bobby Burke(7-5) was the

losing pitcher. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said

Newsom. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure

and everything went well.'

Win:Winegarner(3-3) Loss:Grove(6-6) Save:Bean(3rd)

Homeruns- E.Morgan(4th)

Shortstop Billy Knickerbocker had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the Cleveland

Indians topped the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway

Park.

Cleveland had 4 runs cross the plate in the 5th inning when they had 4 base

hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Knickerbocker who deflated the mood

of the partisan fans when he doubled plating all three baserunners.

Cleveland rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon.

Ralph Winegarner(3-3) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. Belve Bean gained credit for his 3rd save. Lefty Grove(6-6) was the

loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 4 and 2/3

innings.
