Al Simmons hit a homerun and had 3 RBI and Sam Jones went 9 strong innings as
the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6 to
1.
Jones(6-7) was very good in the win. He gave up just 6 hits and no walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 4.30. Chicago managed 13 in their victory.
Firpo Marberry(4-7) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 10 hits and no walks. The win by Chicago is a very welcome one as
they have been struggling in recent days. Their record now stands at 24-42 -
only 2-8 in their last ten games. With this loss, Detroit has a 3-7 record
of late, 37-28 overall.

Bill Dietrich completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Philadelphia Athletics topped the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 4 at
Shibe Park.
Philadelphia brought 1 run across the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Boston threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.
The victory was credited to Dietrich(6-1) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. Johnny Welch(7-2) suffered the loss. He was unable to control the
Philadelphia offense and allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
'This was a tough loss,' said Bucky Harris, 'the kind that sticks with you for
awhile.'

The New York Yankees edged the Washington Nationals in 10 innings at Griffith
Stadium by the score of 4 to 3.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Finally, New York pulled the
game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Lou Gehrig drew a
walk. Ben Chapman stepped into the batter's box and he singled. Bill Dickey
then doubled scoring the run. Although they lost, Washington did out-hit New
York 13 to 9.
The win went to Red Ruffing(8-4) who allowed 3 runs in 9 innings. Johnny
Murphy recorded the save, his 4th. Jack Russell(3-2) was given the loss in
relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1 inning.
