Johnny Broaca went 9 strong innings and Myril Hoag had 2 base hits as the New
York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 2 to 0.

In the 5th inning New York went on top for good plating an isolated run
utilizing 2 base hits. New York had a total of 8 hits for the game.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Broaca(14-6). Firpo Marberry(7-10) was
the loser. He surrendered 8 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

Eric McNair had 2 base hits and Johnny Marcum hurled a fine complete game
shutout as the Philadelphia Athletics outscored the Chicago White Sox 3 to
0.

Marcum(17-8) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He allowed just 6 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither
team was able to score again.

George Earnshaw(10-17) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 3 runs and 8
hits in 8 innings.

Mel Harder completed the game without help from the bullpen at League Park
where the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Nationals 6 to 5.

In the bottom of the 7th inning Cleveland went on top for good with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Earl Averill opened up the inning nicely when he drew
a walk. Hal Trosky stepped up next and he tripled driving in a run. Joe
Vosmik then stroked a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.
Washington had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Harder(15-8) allowed 5 runs on the game. Syd Cohen(0-2) took the loss. He
allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 11 hits and 3 walks in 7
innings.

Roy Pepper launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the St. Louis Browns pulled
out a win over the Boston Red Sox by a score of 7 to 6 at Sportsman's
Park.

The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Frank Grube slapped a
single. Alan Strange was next and he reached on an error. Jim Walkup then
lined a single resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a wild
post-game celebration by the home town fans. Despite losing, Boston out-hit
St. Louis 13 to 7.

The victory was credited to Walkup(2-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing
no runs. Herb Pennock(5-3) was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 3
hits and no walks in 1 inning.

The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 62-82. With the loss, Boston
has a record of 4-6 lately, 81-64 overall.
