Rick Ferrell
Note: If we're going to profile all of the 1930 era Hall of Famers, we need to pick up the pace. We'll be posting daily "player of the weeks" for the time being!
Red Sox catcher Rick Ferrell (HA 29) had a fine game in yesterday's double header with the White Sox. He caught over 1800 games in 18 years in the American League with the Browns, Red Sox, and Senators. An 8 time All Star, Ferrell's hitting record is less than impressive by Hall of Fame standards (lifetime OPS+ of 95). Much of his value is probably attributable to longevity.
James concludes that Ferrrell was "a pretty good player" but no Hall of Famer. His high number of walks added to his on base percentage considerably. He was also a good defensive catcher.
Ferrell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
