New York set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 5 runners on 5 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. New York rapped out 12 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Gomez(23-9) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. General Crowder(6-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 1 inning giving up 5 hits and 1 walk. BOSTON AT ST. Hadley(10-16) had a solid outing for St. Louis. He went 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 4 walks. Boston threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally. George Hockette(0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk. 'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Bucky Harris said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?' Johnson had a good day at the plate. He quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 40th of the season) in the 3rd inning and delivered a one-base hit in the 6th inning. Philadelphia finished with 11 hits while Chicago ended up with 6. Joe Cascarella(8-11) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory. Cascarella got help from Al Benton who was credited with his 3rd save. Hugo Klaerner(0-1) was the losing pitcher. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 7 walks in 4 innings. Washington came up with 2 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 3 hits. They would hold up as the winning runs. Cleveland had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. The victory went to Diggs(1-0) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Oral Hildebrand(12-10) suffered the loss. He gave up 8 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings.
