Charlie Gehringer had 5 hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers ballclub

embarrassed the Cleveland Indians by the count of 17 to 7.



Gehringer had a big day at the plate. He lined a single scoring a run in the

1st inning, stroked a base-hit in the 2nd inning, doubled resulting in a run

in the 3rd inning, doubled scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning and

doubled in the 6th inning. Detroit bats were very productive in the 1st

inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 6 hits. The Detroit offense was great,

scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.



Elden Auker(13-7) got the win allowing 5 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Mel

Harder(12-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 6

hits and 2 walks.

Dusty Cooke had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Gordon Rhodes whitewashed

Philadelphia as the Boston Red Sox topped the Philadelphia Athletics by a

score of 5 to 0 at Shibe Park.



Rhodes(12-12) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and

5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.92 to 4.69. Boston totaled 12

on the afternoon.



Joe Cascarella(7-10) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard,

allowing 10 hits and 7 walks in 7 innings.

At Sportsman's Park, the St. Louis fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.

Milt Gaston(6-12) finally bested his St. Louis opposite, Bobo Newsom(13-8),

by the score of 4 to 0.



Chicago delivered all the runs required in the 1st inning when they tallied 4

runs on 4 hits. That early run support was enough for Gaston and Chicago.

Neither team managed to score after the 1st inning.



Gaston got help from Harry Kinzy who was credited with his 3rd save. Newsom

was the loser. He allowed 7 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings.

1,990 fans watched an exciting game at Sportsman's Park. The St. Louis Browns

topped the Chicago White Sox by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.



St. Louis tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Chicago threatened

in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally.



The victory went to Dick Coffman(5-11) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3

runs. Coffman got help from Bobo Newsom who earned his 3rd save. Phil

Gallivan(3-9) suffered the loss.



'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Jimmy Dykes 'But we

have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'

Pete Susko had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals topped the

New York Yankees by a score of 7 to 6 at Yankee Stadium.



Earl Whitehill(15-11) pitched a solid game. He went 8 and 2/3 innings

surrendering 8 hits and 3 walks. New York had a chance in the 9th but they

came up short.



Whitehill got help from Tommy Thomas who earned his 1st save. The loss was

charged to Johnny Murphy(9-7). He allowed 10 hits and 7 walks in 6 and 2/3

innings.



'This was a tough loss,' said Joe McCarthy, 'the kind that sticks with you for

awhile.'
