Third baseman Blondy Ryan went deep and had 2 RBI and Hal Schumacher was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the NewYork Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 2 at the Baker Bowl. New York promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating an isolated run. After two outs Bill Terry took charge himself, delivering a solo homerun (his 4th of the season). Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. Schumacher(6-4) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Reggie Grabowski(0-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 5innings.

Babe Herman hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI at Wrigley Field as the ChicagoCubs embarrassed the Cincinnati Reds by the lopsided score of 14 to4. Herman enjoyed a big day at the plate. He laced a base-knock resulting in arun in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the season) in the 5th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and tripled which scored a run in the 8th inning. Chicago bats were hot in the 5th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits. Chicago out-hit Cincinnati for the game, 22 hits to 10. Pat Malone(5-4) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Tony Freitas(0-2) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 8 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Herman said. 'We played well together as a team.'

Buzz Boyle had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the blistering-hot Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves by the score of 5 to 4 at Ebbetts Field in the first game of a double header. In the 3rd inning, Brooklyn scored 3 runs with the help of 3 hits. Ray Benge led off and started the rally when he reached on an error. Boyle stepped up to the plate and he laced a base-knock. Two outs later, Hack Wilson came up and he drew a walk to load the bases. Sam Leslie stepped in and he laced a one-base hit which scored a run. Tony Cuccinello came to the plate and drew a walk bringing in another run. Joe Stripp kept things alive and laced a single scoring the final run of the inning. Boston threatened in the 9th, but their rally came up short. The win went to Benge (7-5) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Tom Zachary recorded the save, his 2nd. Ben Cantwell(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks.

In the nightcap, the sizzling Dodgers defeated the Braves by a score of 12 to 8. Danny Taylor enjoyed a big game at the plate. He popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 2nd of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 2nd inning and singled plating a run in the 8th inning. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Les Munns (2-1) allowed 2 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Huck Betts (3-5). He allowed a few too manybase runners giving up 14 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Brooklyn continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 8 games and counting.

Afterwards, Dodgers manager Casey Stengel bantered with the presss. 'It seems we can't lose these days', Stengel volunteered. Then after a moment to reflect he lamented, 'Oh great! Now I've gone and jinxed us!'

Vic Sorrell completed the game without help from the bullpen and Charlie Gehringer lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the DetroitTigers topped the Chicago White Sox by a score of 7 to 1 at NavinField. Sorrell(4-4) gave Detroit a solid outing. He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walkin 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.83 to 4.33. Detroit totaled 12 onthe afternoon. The losing pitcher was Whit Wyatt(3-1). He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.

Pearson(6-4) was virtually untouchable. He surrendered only 4 hits and 2walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.39 to 3.01. Cleveland rapped out10 hits for the afternoon. Ivy Andrews(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in6 innings. Cleveland now has a record of 22-21. Rogers Hornsby was unhappywith his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said.'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

Rube Walberg was credited with his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was MonteWeaver(6-5). With this win, Boston has a 26-21 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, Washington has a record of 7-3 lately, 29-20 overall.

Waner was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He slapped a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 3rd inning, banged out a single in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 7th inning and laced a base-knock in the 9th inning. Pittsburgh banged out 16 on the afternoon. The victory went to French (5-3) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Tex Carleton(5-4) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies were certainly pleased to stop the bleeding as their7 game losing streak was finally halted and had an easy time of it at BakerBowl defeating the New York Giants by a score of 9 to 3. Curt Davis(5-4) had a solid outing for Philadelphia. He was reached for 10hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Philadelphia had 13 hits for the afternoonwhile New York had 10. Joe Bowman(1-2) was the losing pitcher. 'Thankfully we got ourselves a win,' Davis said. 'It's great to be back on the winning side of things.'

Si Johnson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 4 at Wrigley Field. Gordon Slade was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He delivered a base-hit knocking in a run in the 2nd inning and quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 1st of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Johnson (3-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. The right-handed Johnson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Woody English singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Ray Kolp earned the save, his 1st. Bud Tinning(4-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in 1 and 2/3 innings.

He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings. 'He was really impressive today,' Marberry said of his counterpart. 'Our guys were just swinging at air.'

Fred Frankhouse (pictured) went the distance and Buck Jordan smacked 2 triples as the Boston Braves outscored the New York Giants 7 to 5. Boston scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits.The big moment was provided by Wally Berger who quieted the crowd when he blasted a two-run home run (his 8th of the season). Boston finished with 14 hits in the victory. The winning pitcher was Frankhouse(5-5) who allowed 5 runs for the game. Fred Fitzsimmons(7-4) was the loser. He allowed Boston 6 runs in 5 innings of work.

Philadelphia was unable to claim the lead after Brooklyn went ahead in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Lopez who quieted the crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 4th of the season). The Philadelphia offense proved no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. Leonard (6-0) allowed 2 runs on the game. George Darrow (0-4) took the loss.'
