June 1st, 1934 - The Story Thus Far

1934: The Story Thus Far

With the completion of April and May games, I thought it might be in order to take stock of the season thus far.

The National League

The National League is, in some ways, proceeding according to script. The Cubs took the early lead, but the Giants are beginning to pull away with a 3 game lead over the Cubs, and are leaving the Cardinals and the rest of the league in the dust. In real life, the Pirates, Cubs, Giants and Cardinals all dueled pretty closely up until this point. The Pirates have faded a little prematurely, but their recent success in Chicago shows that they stilll have enough offense, if not pitching, to be a real factor in this pennant race.

The biggest surprise has been the failure of the Cardinals to keep pace. They are 5 games behind where they were at this point IRL. First baseman Rip Collins has seriously underperformed (SLOB of .834) vs his IRL 1934 stats (SLOB of 1.008). But the real story here is Dizzy Dean.

Dean was the NL MVP in 1934, with a W-L of 30-7 and ERA of 2.66. In the replay he is 2-6, with a 3.72 replay. The most significant factor appears to be significantly more walks (2.8 / 9 innings a game in replay and 2.2 IRL). Dean will have to start pitching truer to form if the Cards are going to pick it up. In the meanwhile, veteran Jesse Haines in helping to pick up the slack (4-0, 3.26 ERA), but he has pitched 30 of his 90 innings already, so he will not be able to carry the team on his back.

Another surprise has been the Boston Braves, who were 20-16 at this point IRL, and would finish over .500. In the replay, they're stuck at 14-22, and don't show much signs of life after their fast league leading start.

Right now in the NL, the Giants look good, the Cubs are within striking distance, and the Bucs and Cards are hanging around with plenty of games left to make their move. The Cards have a nice mixture of pitching and hitting, whereas the Bucs are hitting oriented. If the Dean brothers can start pitching up their potential, they'll challenge the Giants and the Cubs.

The Giants probably appear stronger than they really are. They've gotten a lot of timely extra base hits from faily weak hitters like Hughie Critz. That won't last. Likewise, their stars are also "overperforming" (Mel Ott is hitting .404/.497/.689 and Carl Hubbell is 9-1 with a 1.62 ERA).

In short, the Giants have gotten the good dice rolls to date and the Cards haven't. The question is whether this will continue or rectify itself in the remaining 113 games or so (told you there's still a LOT of games to be played!!!).

The American League

In the American League, things are pretty wild. The A's and Nationals have continued to be very strong, while the Red Sox, IRL a .500 team, looked unbeatable for a while, but have now faded. The Tigers are 1 game ahead of pace at 22-17, while the Indians are 4 games behind theirs at 17-18. The other team we need to take a closer look at, however, are the New York Yankees.

The 1934 AL race in real life was mostly between the Tigers, Indians and Yankees. The Yankees are now only 2 games behind their pace at 20-18, but they needed a big streak to catch up. At one point, they were in 7th place at 11-16. They have won 9 of their last 11, have finally appear to have righted the ship. Like Dizzy Dean, Yankees ace Lefty Gomez got off to a slow start, but has now caught fire.

One big reason that the Yankees are back in the hunt is Lou Gehrig:

To give you a sense of perspective, 59 RBIs at 38 games comes out to 239 RBIs after 154 games! This would SHATTER the current MLB record of 191, set in 1930 by Hack Wilson. Gehrig is also on track to hit 63 HRs, which would break Ruth's 1927 record of 60. We'll keep an eye on Gehrig throughout the season, but the RBI record appears to be in real trouble!

Giants Overpower Dodgers at Ebbets, 9-2

Schumacher goes the distance for win number 5

Hal Schumacher went the distance and Travis Jackson (pictured) hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at Ebbetts Field where the New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 9 to 2. Schumacher(5-3) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from3.87 to 3.59. New York finished with 15 hits in the victory. Ray Benge(5-5) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hitsand 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. New York continued their winnings waysimproving their record to a league leading 28-13. They are 8-2 in their lastten games. Brooklyn has a record of 18-19 after the loss.

Bill Swift carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 6 to 2 at Wrigley Field. Swift(3-2) pitched well for Pittsburgh in their victory. He went 9 inningsallowing 5 hits and 3 walks reducing his ERA from 5.14 to 4.50. Theright-handed Swift had his no-hit bid broken up by Woody English who singledwith nobody out in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh banged out 12 on theafternoon. Guy Bush(5-3) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too manybase runners giving up 11 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

The game was close through 7, with the Cards holding a 4-3 lead in a game that saw Jess Haines and Paul Derringer throwing what appeared to be a tightly pitched game. In the 8th, however, the Cards unloaded on Derringer and the Reds.

Jesse Haines tossed a complete game and Jack Rothrock hit 2 doubles and had 4 RBI. The Cincinnati fans didn't appreciate the big day Rothrock had. He doubled, plating two runs in the 5th inning, stroked a base-hit in the 7th inning anddoubled scoring two baserunners in the 8th inning. St. Louis banged out 16 on the afternoon. Haines(4-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 4 runs. Paul Derringer(3-4) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Tigers Slam at Sportsman's Park; Withstand Furious Browns Comeback

Hornsby 3 run pinch hit homer thrills Browns' fans despite loss

Hank Greenberg (pictured) left the yard and had 3 RBI at Sportsman's Park where the Detroit Tigers beat the St. Louis Browns by the score of 9 to 6.

Once again, the Tigers were only able to escape with a win after a fierce Browns' comeback. Down 8-1, Browns' manager Rogers Hornsby picked up a bat and hit a three run home run off reliever Elden Auker to cap a 4 run Browns 8th.

St. Louis was unable to recover after Detroit went ahead in the top of the 3rd inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Greenberg who quieted the home crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. Detroit had a total of 10 hits for the game.

The win went to Carl Fischer(3-0) who allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. The loss was charged to Ivy Andrews(1-4). He allowed Detroit 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings of work. With this win, Detroit has a 22-17 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, St. Louis is 2-8 lately and 10-27, worst in the league on the year.

The Washington Nationals cruised to a 6 to 1 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Washington came up with 4 runs in the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits.
They would hold up as the winning runs. Washington had 15 hits for the afternoon while New York had 7.

The win was credited to Monte Weaver (pictured) (5-4) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run.
Russ Van Atta(1-4) was given the loss. He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 11 hits and 1 walk.

At League Park the Chicago White Sox easily handled the Cleveland Indians in 12 innings by the score of 6 to 2.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Chicago came out on top in the 12th inning. The highlight belonged to Mule Haas who disappointed the partisan crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Although they lost, Cleveland did out-hit Chicago 12 to 8.

The victory was credited to Sam Jones(3-5) who went 11 innings, allowing 2 runs. Ralph Winegarner(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. Chicago scored big getting 4 runs off him in 2 innings.

The Chicago ballclub's record now stands at 16-21. With the loss Cleveland now has a record of 17-18.

In the opener, Lon Warneke allowed only 2 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard for Pittsburgh as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 9 to 0 at Wrigley Field. Chuck Klein provided much of the offense. He tripled scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 5th inning and hit a single in the 6th inning. Chicago had 13 hits for the afternoon. It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Warneke(8-1). Heinie Meine(2-1) was given the loss.


Catcher Earl Grace went yard and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over the Cubs, 10 to 6, in the second game. Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning when they scored 5 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Lloyd Waner who quieted the home crowd when he tripled clearing all three ducks off the pond. Pittsburgh rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Bill Harris(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Charlie Root(2-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'The only way this one could have been better', said Harris, 'was if we hadplayed it at home.'

Ethan Allen (pictured) had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Cy Moore shut out Boston while allowing the Philadelphia bullpen a day-off at Braves Field as the Philadelphia Phillies, running on all cylinders, ripped the Boston Braves by a large 11 to 0 margin in the opening game. Allen had a big day with his bat. He doubled in the 1st inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 9th inning. Philadelphia had 12 hits for the afternoon. Moore(1-3) was credited with the shutout. Ed Brandt(3-5) was given the loss.

In the second game, Allen had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies staged a dramatic comeback over the Boston Braves by a score of 6 to 5. Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when theyscored 4 runs on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Allen who silenced the stadium when he doubled which was good for two runs. The win went to Cy Malis(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.


Bob Brown(1-2)was the loser in relief. Brown was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down and our fans. One minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's overwith! I just hope I get a chance to redeem myself real soon!

Bill Terry had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Ebbetts Field where the New York Giantsbeat the Brooklyn Dodgers 8 to 3. Watty Clark(1-1) pitched a fine game. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings improving his ERA from 2.70 to 1.59. New York had 14 hits overall, while Brooklyn had 9. Clark got help from Dolf Luque who was credited with his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Van Lingle Mungo(4-7). He surrendered 12 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.


In a tight second game the Giants prevailed 8 to 6. Joe Bowman(1-1) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory. He gave up 14 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Bowman was helped out by Slick Castleman who recorded his 1st save. Ray Lucas(0-1) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings. New York continued their winning ways improving their record to a leagueleading 27-13. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's record is 18-18.

Jim Bottomley had 3 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. LouisCardinals in 10 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Crosley Field in the opener.


The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Cincinnati ended up winning it in the 10th inning. Jake Flowers came to the plate and stroked a bases loaded single, giving Cincinnati the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. The victory was credited to Ray Kolp(2-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Bill Walker(1-2) was the loser in relief. The win by Cincinnati was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. Now their seasonal record improves to 10-23.

In the second game, Tex Carleton tossed a shutout as the Cardinals beat the Reds 5 to 0. Carleton(4-3) put on a good performance. He gave up just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.78 to 3.23. St. Louis finished with 13 hits in the victory. Tony Freitas(0-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 12 hits and no walks in 7 and1/3 innings.
