Ollie Bejma is an infielder for the St. Louis Browns. He is a rookie in 1934, and will play in 95 games this season. Bejma played for the Brown through 1936. He played for the White Sox in 1939. Red Sox Topple Tigers, 7-6
Auker ineffective in relief again

One run was the difference at Navin Field as the Boston Red Sox defeated theDetroit Tigers 7 to 6.

Lefty Grove(3-1) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 10 hits and 4 walks. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Grove got help from Hank Johnson who was credited with his 1st save. Elden Auker(3-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs in 2 and 2/3innings of work.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Grove, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

At Sportsman's Park the New York Yankees were battered 10 to 5 by the St. Louis Browns. New York fell behind quickly as the St. Louis offense came through in the first inning as they scored 3 runs on 5 base hits. Rookie Ollie Bejma (pictured) went 3 for 5, scoring 2 and driving in 2. For the game St. Louis out-hit New York 18 to 11.

Ed Wells (1-4) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. DannyMacfayden(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 7 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings. 'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Wells said. 'It's great to be back on the winning side of things.'

The Cleveland Indians cruised to a 9 to 4 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics at League Park. Cleveland jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. Cleveland ended up with 17 hits for the game whilePhiladelphia had 12.

Oral Hildebrand(2-4) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. The losing pitcher was Johnny Marcum (4-3). He allowed a few too many baserunners givingup 17 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Ted Lyons went the distance at Comiskey Park where the Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 4 to 1. Chicago had 2 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Frenchy Bordagaray got things rolling when he slapped a base-hit. Mule Haas stepped up next and he doubled plating a run. He also had his first homer of the year. Zeke Bonura then doubled scoring the final run of the inning.

Chicago and Washington each finished the afternoon with 7 hits. Lyons (2-2) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Tommy Thomas(2-1) took the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.

Cards Hold on for Extra Innings Win in Philly
Davis blasts 10th inning homer for win

Catcher Spud Davis cracked 2 home runs and had 5 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 8 at the Baker Bowl.

The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings. St. Louis won it in the 10th inning. Davis smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season). Both teams finished the game with 16 hits.

Jesse Haines(3-0) was the winner, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Syl Johnson(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. The St. Louis ball club's record now stands at 18-16. Philadelphia has a record of 13-18 after the loss.

First baseman Bill Terry had 3 base hits as the New York Giants topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 6 to 5 at the Polo Grounds. New York took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. For the game New York out-hit Pittsburgh 14 to 10.

Jack Salveson (4-0) allowed no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Red Lucas(2-3) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 13 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. This win by New York continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are 23-12. With the loss Pittsburgh now has a record of 15-15.

Mungo Outduels Rival in Dodger Win

Van Lingle Mungo threw a complete game shutout as the Brooklyn Dodgers outscored the Cincinnati Reds 2 to 0.

Mungo(4-6) was simply too much for the Cincinnati batters. He allowed only 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.95 to 3.50. Brooklyn had just 4 hits for the afternoon. Paul Derringer(3-3) was the loser. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 4 hits and 2 walks. The Brooklyn ballclub's record now stands at 17-15. Cincinnati can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

Hal Lee left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Boston Braves topped the Chicago Cubs in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 3 at Braves Field.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Chicago scored one in the top of the 11th, but Boston was not done. In the bottom half of the inning, Bill Urbanski led off with a single. Buck Jordan then drew a walk. The crowd stared to cheer loudly as Lee who already had two hits on the day, approached home plate. Lee took a 1-2 curve ball the other way, and the ball sailed and sailed, just clearing the distant 364 foot right field chain link fence for only his second homer of the year as 4,734 happy fans celebrated wildly.


For the game Boston out-hit Chicago 13 to 9. Bob Smith (1-0) went 3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Guy Bush (5-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 13 hits and 4 walks in 10 innings.

The Detroit Tigers appeared to be cruising towards their 19th win of the season after 7 innings today. Up 4-0, with Schoolboy Rowe throwing a shut out, the Tigers may have gotten too comfortable. The Red Sox scored 4 times in the 8th to send the game to extra innings.

In the 11th inning for Boston. Dusty Cooke drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Lyn Lary stepped up to the plate and he lined a single scoring the run.

Boston had 8 hits for the afternoon. Rube Walberg(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 innings and allowingn o runs. Schoolboy Rowe(4-1) was the loser. He pitched 10 innings giving up 7 hits and 5 walks.

Lloyd Brown completed the game without help from the bullpen as the ClevelandIndians man-handled the Philadelphia Athletics - the final score was 11 to1. It was a good day for Cleveland thanks to Odell Hale. He doubled plating tworuns in the 1st inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 2nd of the season) inthe 3rd inning. Cleveland had 13 hits for the afternoon. Brown(1-3) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. RoyMahaffey(0-4) was given the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runsin 2 and 1/3 innings.

Monte Weaver was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Comiskey Park as the Washington Nationals beat the ChicagoWhite Sox by the count of 7 to 2.

Heinie Manush went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, knocking in 4 of the Nationals' 7 runs.

Weaver(4-4) gave Washington a solid outing. He was reached for 8 hits and 1walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.11 to 3.82. Washington finishedwith 14 hits in the victory. Sam Jones(2-5) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Second baseman Augie Galan cracked a homer and Lon Warneke completed the game without help from the bullpen at Braves Field as the Chicago Cubs beat the Boston Braves 6 to 4.


Chicago wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Charlie Grimm who silenced the stadium when he laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs. Boston was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.


Warneke(7-1) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. Ben Cantwell(1-2) took the loss. 'He gutted it out' Grimm said of Warneke. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
