Carl Hubbell (pictured) blanked St. Louis in a very well-pitched complete game and Mel Ott homered and had 2 RBI as the New York Giants outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 2 to 0. Hubbell (8-0) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings allowing 10 hits and no walks. Although they lost, St. Louis did out-hit New York 10 to 5. Dizzy Dean(2-6) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered only 2 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.

Lon Warneke (pictured) tossed a complete game as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 2 to 1 at Ebbetts Field. Chicago had 1 run cross the plate in the 5th inning. Brooklyn threatened in the 9th but Chicago was able to put down the rally. Warneke(6-1) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Van LingleMungo (3-6) was the loser. 'He gutted it out' Charlie Grimm said of Warneke. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'

Wally Berger had 2 base hits as the Boston Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 15 innings by the score of 2 to 1 at Braves Field. The score was tied at 1 after nine. Boston came out the victor in the 15thinning. Berger ripped a base-knock. Two outs later Pinky Whitney came to the plate and reached on an error. Shanty Hogan then reached on an error, making Boston victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Despite losing, Cincinnati out-hit Boston 12 to 9.

Bob Brown (1-1) (pictured) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Joe Shaute (1-3) was given the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work. With this win, Boston has a 9-18 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With the loss, the Cincinnati ballclub's record is 8-19.

Harvey Hendrick (pictured) hit 2 doubles and had 4 RBI at Baker Bowl as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 2. Philadelphia started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their halfof the first with 3 runs using 2 hits.

Dick Bartell started the inning offright when he laced a base-hit, and an error was also committed. After an out was recorded, Ethan Allen stepped up to the plate and he reached on an error. Hendrick then reached on an error which scored a run. Don Hurst was up next and he delivered a one-base hit to load the bases. Mickey Haslin stepped into the box and drew a walk scoring one more run. Lou Chiozza added his contribution to the rally and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of theinning. That scoring would be all that was needed. For the gamePhiladelphia out-hit Pittsburgh 11 to 6.

The victory went to Curt Davis(3-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Hal Smith(0-1). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. Philadelphia now has a record of 11-15. With this loss, Pittsburgh has a 5-5record of late, 13-12 overall.

Schoolboy Rowe was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Detroit Tigers won a dandy at Navin Field over the Washington Nationals, 4 to 3.


The game was decided in the 9th inning. Frank Doljack (pictured) laced a base-hit to spark the inning. Two outs later Charlie Gehringer came up and he lined a one-base hit. Billy Rogell then laced a single making Detroit the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Detroit finished with 13 hits in the victory.


Rowe(4-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Bobby Burke(0-2) was the loser. He was knocked around by Detroit, allowing 13 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. 'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought itwas nothing.' Rowe said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put theball where I wanted it.

Center fielder Sammy West (pictured) hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Browns beat the Philadelphia Athletics by the count of 15 to 6. West really 'lit it up' for St. Louis. He cracked a two-run shot (his 3rd ofthe season) in the 1st inning, ripped a base-knock in the 3rd inning, tripled scoring a run in the 5th inning, doubled plating a run in the 6th inning andl aced a base-hit in the 7th inning. St. Louis lit up the scoreboard in the 6th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits.


St. Louis out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 19 hits to 16. The win was credited to George Blaeholder (2-3) who went 8 and 2/3 inningsallowing 6 runs. Roy Mahaffey (0-3) was the loser. By giving up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings his ERA increased from 5.40 to 5.77.

Earl Averill (pictured) rocketed 3 home runs and had 9 RBI and Monte Pearson pitched a complete game as the Cleveland Indians crushed the New York Yankees 21 to4.

Averill was spectacular at the plate. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 3rd inning, stroked a base-hit in the 5th inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 6th inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning. Cleveland bats were hot in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits and the 6th inning with 5 runs on 6 hits. The Cleveland offense man-handled the New York pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings. The victory went to Pearson (3-3) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. DannyMacfayden(1-4) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Averill said. 'We played well together as a team.'

The critical plate appearance was by Zeke Bonura who made the crowd happy when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 5th of the season). St. Louis won the game with a run in the 8th inning. Burgess Whitehead doubled. Jack Rothrock came next and he slapped a base-hit scoring the run. St. Louis managed 8 in their victory. The winning pitcher was Carleton (3-2) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Ed Brandt(2-4) was given the loss. With this win, St. Louis has a 16-12 record.They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, the Boston ballclub's record is 8-18.

Pittsburgh fell behind quickly as the Brooklyn offense came through in the first inning when they tallied 6 runs on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Al Lopez who brought the crowd to their feet when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 3rd of the season). Pittsburgh scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from victory. Ray Benge (5-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 7 runs. Red Lucas (2-2) suffered the loss. Brooklyn now has a record of 15-11. Pittsburgh has a record of 13-11 after the loss.

Hal Schumacher tossed a complete game as the New York Giants topped the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 4 to 2 at Polo Grounds. Schumacher(4-2) gave New York a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings, lowering his ERA from 4.20 to 3.90. New York finished with 7 hits in the victory, two each for shortstop Hughie Critz (pictured) and third baseman Blondy Ryan. Don Brennan(2-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings

Lefty Gomez was able to finish what he started and was credited with ac omplete game. Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig had 2 base hits and 2 RBIs as the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 2. New York jumped on top of Detroit in the top of the 6th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Tony Lazzeri ,who deflated the crowd as he doubled scoring two baserunners. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.


Gomez (4-3) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Vic Sorrell (2-3)was hit with the loss. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 4 walks.

Mel Harder went 9 strong innings at League Park where the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Nationals 6 to 0.


Cleveland tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. Hal Trosky started the inning off right when he tripled. Frankie Pytlak next to the plate and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring a run. WillieKamm then ripped a base-knock. Harder followed and he doubled, scoring another run. After another out, Billy Knickerbocker came to the plate andslapped a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. That scoring would be all that was needed.

Cleveland banged out 12 on the afternoon. Harder (4-1) was credited with the shutout. Monte Weaver (2-4) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. 'Harder just dominated us' losing pitcher Weaver said. 'Hopefully we can get to him the next time around'

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Finally, Philadelphia pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Foxx led off and he laced a single. Lou Finney stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Eric McNair then lined a base-hit to load the bases. Pinky Higgins (pictured) stepped in and he bangedout a single scoring two teammates.


Philadelphia out-hit Chicago for the game, 17 hits to 9. The victory was credited to Bill Dietrich(3-1) who went 2 innings, allowing 1 run. Tietje (1-2) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits in 4 innings.

At Sportsman's Park the Boston Red Sox put 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning and easily handled the St. Louis Browns by the score of 7 to 3. Boston took the lead off Dick Coffman in the first inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. Bill Cissell tripled. Billy Werber was next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but theycame up short. The win went to Lefty Grove(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings, before yielding way to Hank Johnson to quell the Browns 9th inning rally. The loss was charged to Coffman (0-2). He was touched for 8 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

May 19th, 1934 - Book Review - Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract

The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract

Bill James is a well known historian and baseball analysts who has pioneered the use of quantitative baseball research known as "Sabrmetrics." His yearly abstracts were considered to be indispensable reading in preparing for the new season by many. Unfortunately James no longer issues annual abstracts, but he has published a historical version that is, simply, indispensable any serious student of the game.

The abstract is really several parts. The first looks at the game's evolution decade by decade. The second is a ranking of the game's players by position. For each, there are dozens of players profiled. Nearly anyone who played the game competently for a full career is ranked and profiled. Throughout the book are many of James's quirky, fascinating essay on topics about why baseball became less exciting than it had in the past (mostly due to excessive pauses between plays dispersing the natural constant tension present in the older, quicker game). Among James's suggestions are limitations on pickoff throws and pitching changes.

Some examples just from the chapter on the 1930s:

-Hooks Wiltse's list of why baseball players aren't as good as they used to be (!)
-The best pitcher in minor league history
-Best minor league teams of the 1930s
-An essay called "The Death of Common Sense in Baseball" that discusses how the rules were formalized in determining league statistical leaders, and how they ultimately yielded nonsensical results.

Thankfully, James also provides at least cursory coverage of the Negro Leagues, ensuring that at least the most deserving players such as Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson and others get much deserved coverage.

As in any good history book, the reader puts it down with a fresh perspective on today's controversies and a deeper appreciation that we're not facing anything our forefathers did not face, grapple with and eventually conquer. This renew our hopes that current concerns about baseball, whether they be steroids, competitiveness, race, etc., can be be dealt with and overcome, because we've done it before.

Although readers may find at least some of James's opinions outlandish (e.g., the 1961 Yankees were not only one of the greatest teams, they do not even deserve the moniker "great."), they will never be bored.

Highest recommendation.
