Cards Trounce Braves in Game of Series at Sportsman's Park

"Ducky Medwick" leads the way for St. Louis

Joe Medwick (pictured) cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the slumping Boston Braves by a score of 13 to 6 at Sportsman's Park. St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After two outs Frankie Frisch got things going when he banged out a single. Medwick was next and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st of the season). St. Louis had a total of 16 hits for the game. The victory was credited to Jesse Haines (2-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Fred Frankhouse(1-3) suffered the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. It was another victory for St. Louis at Sportsman's Park. Now their winning streak stands at 6 games. Frisch was in a talkative mood after the ballgame. 'Fellows, I don't know what to tell you. our guys are just playing lights out lately. Everything and everybody is just really hitting on all cylinders. I know it can't last forever - but that isn't going to stop us from trying!'

Teams trade big innings in exciting ball game

Pirates fans were doubtlessly feeling good after their team took a 6-0 lead after the first inning. But, the Dodgers showed they weren't done as they responded with a 5 run third. Lonny Frey slammed a home run and had 3 RBI, and Buzz Boyle (pictured) continued to lead all Dodgers hitters with three hits, raising his team leading average to .417. Frey had a big day against Pittsburgh. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 2nd of the season) in the 3rd inning, tripled resulting in a run in the 4th inning and banged out a single which plated a run in the 8th inning. Brooklyn had 16 hits for the afternoon while Pittsburgh had 11. Art Herring(1-0) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Les Munns earned his 2nd save. Waite Hoyt (0-3) was the loser in relief. His ERA ballooned from 2.79 to 4.40 as he allowed 4 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Brooklyn has a 10-6 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Pittsburgh has a record of 8-8 after the loss.

Hal Schumacher allowed Bill Terry to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the New York Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 4 to 1 at Crosley Field. New York came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs using 3 hits. Hughie Critz kicked off the action when he slapped a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Si Johnson came up and he threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball. Mel Ott then tripled driving in a run. Travis Jackson stepped in and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 1st of the season). Cincinnati proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. Schumacher(3-1) allowed 1 run on the game. Johnson (0-5) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks.

Chicago Bombs Philadelphia at Wrigley, 10-1

Lon Warneke went the distance, tossing a complete game, and catcher Gabby Hartnett touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 10 to 1 at Wrigley Field. Cubs third baseman Woody English (pictured) led the way, going 4 for 5. Warneke (4-1) put on a good performance. He allowed just 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.27 to 2.01. Chicago kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings. Snipe Hansen(1-1) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 14 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Tigers Win in 12 at Fenway

Boston goes through roster, but can't find way to win at home

The Detroit Tigers managed to defeat the Boston Red Sox in 12 in a game that saw the home town team outhit the visistors 21-13. One key in the loss has been first place Boston's Achilles' Heel - its poor fielding, particularly that of Sox shortstop Bill Werber. Werber committed two of Boston's four errors. Three of Detroit's 8 runs were unearned. Detroit outfielder Goose Goslin had his first big game of the year, going 4 for 6. Tigers pitcher Luke Hamlin shut down the Sox for the final 2 and 1/3 innings. Other key plays for Detroit included a Charlie Gehringer homer and a key block at home plate by Tiger catcher Mickey Cochrane in the bottom of the 8th. The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. Detroit won the game inthe 12th inning. Billy Rogell slapped a base-hit, and an error was also committed. Two outs later Pete Fox stepped in and he drew a walk. Goose Goslin then drew a walk to load the bases. George Pipgras then let one slipout of his hand for a wild pitch scoring the run. Detroit won despite beingout-hit by Boston 21 hits to 13.

Although he didn't get any extra base hits, Nationals right fielder John Stone (pictured) was able to come through when needed, hitting three singles and knocking in three runs as the home town team won the first game in their series with Chicago. Stone's biggest hit came in the bottom of the 8th. With the Sox up by a run, Heinie Manush and Joe Cronin rapped out two singles. They were moved over by an excellent bunt from center fielder Fred Schulte. Stone's looper into right field scored both baserunners, enabling Washington's 6-5 win.

In other Nationals' highlights, Manush went yard and Jack Russell was great in relief. Ed Linke(1-0) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning pitcher. He was reached for 1 hit and 2 walks in 1 inning. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Russell recorded his 1st save. Les Tietje(1-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 3 innings allowing 4 hits and no walks.

Washington shortstop and manager Joe Cronin was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only wecould win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

Vosmik, Tribe Pound A's at Shibe, 11-6

Left fielder Joe Vosmik (pictured) had 5 hits and 3 RBI at Shibe Park as the ClevelandIndians came back dramatically to top the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 11 to 6. The difference in the game was the offensive outburst by Cleveland in the 9th inning when they blasted Philadelphia for 7 runs on 7 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Billy Knickerbocker who quieted the home crowd when hes macked a single which was good for two runs. Overall, Cleveland out-hit Philadelphia 15 to 11. Willis Hudlin (2-1) allowed 6 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Bill Dietrich(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 2 innings. Walter Johnson was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your lastat bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as my grandpop used to like to say, 'it's not over'til its over.'

Browns Stun Yankees Before 14,000 in Bronx

In a close game it was the St. Louis Browns 6, the New York Yankees 4 at Yankee Stadium. St. Louis jumped on top of New York in the 3rd inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. Frank Grube laced a single, and an error was also committed. Alan Strange came next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The win went to Ivy Andrews (1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Danny Macfayden(0-3) was given the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk. 'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game,' New York manager Joe McCarthy said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

Charlie Root had a strong outing and Dolph Camilli had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Chicago Cubs beat the slumping Boston Braves 8 to 0. Chicago took the lead off Huck Betts in the first inning plating an isolated run on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Root (2-0) and Chicago. That was all the run support Root required. Chicago finished with 14 hits in the victory. Betts(0-3) took the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Fred Fitzsimmons completed the game without help from the bullpen at Forbes Field as the New York Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 9 to4. New York tallied 3 runs in the 6th inning. Mel Ott was the sparkplug when he delivered a solo blast (his 3rd of the season). Travis Jackson came next and he reached on an error. Hank Leiber then blasted a two-run home run (his 2nd of the season). New York rapped out 14 hits for the afternoon. Fitzsimmons(2-2) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Ralph Birkofer(1-3) suffered the loss. He was touched for 3 home runs in his 6 innings of work.

Cards Make it Five in a Row with 5-2 Win Over Phils

Dizzy Dean has strong outing in complete game win

Dizzy Dean allowed Frankie Frisch to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game, and second baseman Frisch had 2 base hits as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 2, sweeping them in their three game series. Philadelphia was unable to recover after St. Louis went ahead in the bottom ofthe 4th inning, scoring a single run on 3 hits. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th, but their rally came up short. Dean (2-3) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Cy Moore (0-3) was charged with the loss. 'You have to give Philadelphia credit, they fought us tough to the end' Frisch said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'

Fischer allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings, lowering his ERA from 5.25 to 4.26. Goose Goslin, who has struggled at the plate this year, stroked two hits, including his first home run of the year. In all, Detroit had 9 hits for the afternoon. Schoolboy Rowe recorded his 1st save, pitching two innings. Red Ruffing (2-1) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 8-6. With the first two batters quickly retired in the bottom of the ninth and the Sox down by a run, it appeared the St. Louis Browns would finally break their 6 game losing streak. But, with the Boston crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs, the Red Sox rallied to top struggling St. Louis Browns by the score of 6 to 5. Carl Reynolds got things rolling when he stroked a base-hit. Moose Solters doubled, and an error was also committed, resulting in a run. Rick Ferrell then laced a single, making Boston the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times. Herb Pennock(2-0) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Dick Coffman(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter, allowing 2 hits and no walks.

In a good matchup it was the Washington Nationals 6, the Cleveland Indians 4 at Griffith Stadium. John Stone (pictured) had a great day at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning, launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 1st of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled which was good for two runs in the 5th inning. Alex McColl was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 2nd save. The victory was credited to Lefty Stewart (1-2) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs. Oral Hildebrand(1-3) was hit with the loss. 'I just wantedto give my team a chance to win.' said Stewart, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

Bob Johnson (pictured) cracked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia Athletics won a thriller over the Chicago White Sox in, 11 to 10. The game was won by Philadelphia with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Doc Cramer slapped a single. Lou Finney next to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. Finney took second on the throw. Jimmie Foxx then was walked intentionally to load the bases. One out later, Johnson came to the plate and drew a walk making Philadelphia the victors tothe delight of the home town faithful. The Philadelphia offense man-handled the Chicago pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings. Bob Kline (1-0) was the winner, allowing 2 runs in 3 innings. George Earnshaw (2-1) was given the loss. He was touched for 5 homeruns in his 8 and1/3 innings of work.

The St. Louis Cardinals nipped the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 4 at Sportsman's Park in a hard fought contest. Bill Walker (1-1) was solid if not spectacular. He allowed 7 hits and 6 walks in 8 innings and allowed 2 gopher balls. Philadelphia made it exciting inthe 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Jesse Haines was credited with his 1st save. The loss was charged to Curt Davis(2-1). He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Cardinal catcher Spud Davis (pictured) had two doubles and three hits overall on the day. 'Guys like Ripper (Collins) and Joe (Medwick) get all the coverage, but has anyone noticed Spud's hitting .360 for us?' asked manager Frank Frisch.

Carl Hubbell was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the New York Giants outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to2. Mel Ott had a good day at the plate. He smacked a single in the 1st inning, doubled plating a run in the 3rd inning and doubled clearing the bases in the 5th inning. Hughie Critz also had three hits and scored two runs for the Giants. New York totaled 12 hits on the afternoon. The victory went to Hubbell (4-0) who went the distance allowing 2 runs, only one earned, lowering his ERA to an astonishing 0.50. Red Lucas (1-1) took the loss. He was knocked around by New York, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Only 1,256 fans were on hand to watch an exciting game at Crosley Field. The Brooklyn Dodger stopped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. Brooklyn won the game with a run in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Brooklyn pitcher Van Lingle Mungo ripped a base-knock. Buzz Boyle (pictured) stepped into the batter's box and he tripled driving in what was prove to be the winning run. Brooklyn won despite being out-hit by Cincinnati 11 to 7. The winning pitcher was Mungo(2-3) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Ownie Carroll got the save, his 2nd. The losing pitcher was Paul Derringer(3-1). After the game, O'Farrell tore into the Reds, who are now 4-11 on the year. "I lit into the boys pretty hard,' said O'Farrel. 'Told 'em that Paul pitched another great game, and the least we could do was score him some runs.'

The Chicago Cubs edged the slumping Boston Braves at Wrigley Field by the score of 6 to 5. Guy Bush (3-1) gave a fine effort for Chicago. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Bush was helped out by Bud Tinning who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 1st save. Tom Zachary (0-2) absorbed the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 10 hits and no walks. Chuck Klein (pictured) hit two doubles, drove in one run and scored another 2 runs to spark the Cubs' offense.
