Tigers Stage Comeback, Win in Extras, 5-4; Greenberg hits massive shot to left in 10th to narrow deficit.Errors played a key role this afternoon as the St. Louis Cardinals allowed the Detroit Tigers to slip the noose and avoid being down three games to none.
Down 3-0 in the fifth, with one out and one on, Tiger pitcher Tommy Bridges lofted a ball to left that looked like a sure out. Cardinal left fielder Joe Medwick lost it in the sun, however, and let the ball drop. Because he could not chance a catch, Pete Fox only made it to second, however. After another out, Mickey Cochrane hit a ball in the hole to second. Cardinal second baseman Frankie Frisch hurried his throw, which went over first baseman Rip Collins' head and into the stands, allowing two runs to score and place Cochrane on second. The next batter, Charlie Gehringer, doubled him in, tying the score at 3, where it remained until the 10th inning, when Hank Greenberg blasted the game winning home run.
The Tigers will try to even the series this afternoon at Sportsman's Park. Elden Auker (16-8, 4.37) will face off against Tex Carlton (20-6, 3.15).
