The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Detroit was victorious in the 10th inning. After two were out Hank Greenberg opened up the rally as he was hit by a pitch. Ray Hayworth next to the plate and he laced a single. Marv Owen then doubled which was good for two runs. Both teams totaled 10 on the afternoon. Chief Hogsett(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Elden Auker earned the save, his 1st. Lefty Gomez(7-6) was the loser. He pitched 10 innings giving up 10 hits and 3 walks. The Detroit Tigers won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. The score was tied at 3 after nine. Detroit won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Pete Fox lined a one-base hit. Fox was running on the next pitch and he stole second. Mickey Cochrane then slapped a base-hit scoring the run. Cochrane took second on the throw. Detroit had a total of 7 hits for the game. The win was credited to Chief Hogsett(2-1) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Johnny Murphy(4-4). He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in 10 innings. Marcum(6-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Chicago batters. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.83 to 4.32. Philadelphia rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon. The losing pitcher was Milt Gaston(4-5). 'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Jimmy Dykes said. Marcum pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.' Pearson(7-5) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and 7 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.44 to 3.20. The right-handed Pearson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Fred Schulte singled with one out in the 7th inning. Cleveland had a total of 10 hits for the game. Earl Whitehill(10-3) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings. ST. West was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He smashed a two-run homer (his 10th of the season) in the 3rd inning, stroked a single bringing in a run in the 5th inning and lined a one-base hit plating a run in the 7th inning. Boston had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Knott(1-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Gordon Rhodes(4-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits and 1 walk.

St. Louis took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. That was all the runs Coffman(1-6) needed. St. Louis totaled 11 on the afternoon. The loss was charged to Lefty Grove(4-3). He pitched 6 innings allowing 10 hits and 1 walk.

Reproduction Baseball Caps

Reproduction Vintage Ball Caps

Recently, I made two acquisitions of reproduction Tigers caps from bygone days. The first was from 1912. Made by American Needle, it is white with a blue Olde English "D" and and bill. The second is from 1952. Made by Cooperstown Caps, it's blue with an orange "D" that is a little simpler in design from that on today's Tigers caps.

American Needle

American Needle does a very good job with their caps. They are made of quality materials, and look great. Costing between $20 and $25, they are of good value. There are many to choose from. One good source for these caps and other vintage baseball goods such as pennants and jerseys is Dugout Memories.

Cooperstown Caps

If American Needle is the GM of vintage ball caps (good quality, mass market pricing), Cooperstown Caps are the Mercedes, Lexus or BMW. Made of real wool with an (optional) leather lining, you know you're wearing something special. Because they make them to order, you can get nearly any cap made. This is not an exagerration. Even if you don't plan to purchase a cap, you'll be amazed at their variety. Not only are there major league teams past and present, but old company teams, military unit teams, etc. You can even get fictional teams' caps such as the Bad News Bears or the New York Knights.

Of course, such luxury comes at price. The caps cost $45 normally (in August they go on sale for about $10 less). They can be reached here.

Paul Dean pitched a complete game in the opener and first baseman Rip Collins went yard andhad 3 RBI as the seemingly unstoppable St. Louis Cardinals defeated thePhiladelphia Phillies by the score of 10 to 1 at Sportsman's Park. St. Louis jumped on top of Philadelphia in the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on5 hits. That was all Dean(5-3) needed. St. Louis managed 15 in theirvictory. Curt Davis(5-6) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runsin 3 and 2/3 innings.

In the nigtcap, though, Phil Collins closed the door on St. Louis as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals 13 to 10. Bill Lohrman(3-0) pitched well enough in relief to get the win. He went 1 and2/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk. Lohrman got help from Collins whopitched great and earned his 1st save. Jesse Haines(4-1) suffered the loss in relief. By giving up 4 runs in 3innings his ERA increased from 3.74 to 4.17.

Shortstop Arky Vaughan had 3 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates won a dandyat Forbes Field over the New York Giants, 4 to 3. The game was won by Pittsburgh with a run in the 9th inning. After an out wasrecorded, Earl Grace drew a walk. Fred Lindstrom stepped up next and hetripled making Pittsburgh the victors to the delight of the home townfaithful. Pittsburgh had 11 hits overall, while New York had 8. The win went to Waite Hoyt(4-5) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. AlSmith(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 3 innings allowing 1hit and 2 walks.

Joe Stripp had 2 base hits and 4 RBI and Van Lingle Mungo went the distance atCrosley Field where the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6 to1. Brooklyn took the lead for good in the 2nd inning plating an isolated runutilizing 2 base hits. Brooklyn finished with 11 hits in the victory. The victory went to Mungo(8-7) who went the distance allowing 1 run. TedKleinhans(1-2) was hit with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. Brooklyn continued their winnings ways improving their record to 31-23. Theyare 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss Cincinnati now has a recordof 17-33, worst in the league.

In a two run game the Boston Braves got by the Chicago Cubs by the score of 5 to 3 in game one. Boston won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 4 hits.Tommy Thompson led off and started the rally when he smacked a single. HalLee came to the plate and doubled. Pinky Whitney then doubled driving hometwo runs. For the game Boston out-hit Chicago 15 to 5. Fred Frankhouse(6-6) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Bob Smithearned his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Lynn Nelson(0-2) in relief.

Bill Lee tossed a complete game in game two as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Boston Braves7 to 3 at Wrigley Field. Lee(5-2) gave Chicago a solid outing. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 9innings. Chicago had 15 hits for the afternoon. Leo Mangum(1-1) was the loser. He surrendered 7 runs and 15 hits in 7 and 2/3innings.

In a good matchup it was the Detroit Tigers 5, the New York Yankees 3 in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium in game one. The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Detroit was victorious in the10th inning. After two were out Hank Greenberg opened up the rally as he was hit by a pitch. Ray Hayworth (pictured)next to the plate and he laced a single. Marv Owen then doubled which was good for two runs. Both teams totaled 10 on the afternoon. Chief Hogsett(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Elden Auker earned the save, his 1st. Lefty Gomez(7-6) was the loser. He pitched 10 innings giving up 10 hits and 3 walks.

9,809 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Detroit Tigers won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. The score was tied at 3 after nine. Detroit won the hard fought contest inthe 10th inning. Pete Fox lined a one-base hit. Fox was running on the nextpitch and he stole second. Mickey Cochrane then slapped a base-hit scoring the run. Cochrane took second on the throw. Detroit had a total of 7 hits for the game. The win was credited to Chief Hogsett (2-1) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Johnny Murphy(4-4). He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in 10 innings.

In game one, Sammy West hit a home run and had 4 RBI and Jack Knott allowed Rogers Hornsbyto rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the St. Louis Browns outscored the Boston Red Sox 5 to 4. West was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He smashed a two-run homer (his 10th of the season) in the 3rd inning, stroked a single bringing in a run in the 5th inning and lined a one-base hit plating a run in the 7th inning. Boston had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Knott (1-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Gordon Rhodes(4-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hitsand 1 walk.

In the nightcap, Dick Coffman (pictured) came through with a solid 9 innings and center fielder Sammy West hit 2 doubles as the St. Louis Browns topped the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 1 at Fenway Park. St. Louis took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning scoring one runner on 2hits. That was all the runs Coffman (1-6) needed. St. Louis totaled 11 onthe afternoon. The loss was charged to Lefty Grove (4-3). He pitched 6 innings allowing 10 hits and 1 walk.

Right fielder Dutch Holland (pictured) hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and Monte Pearson tooka no-hitter into the 7th inning at Griffith Stadium where the ClevelandIndians beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 4 to 1. Pearson(7-5) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't allowmuch, just 2 hits and 7 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.44 to3.20. The right-handed Pearson lost his chance for a no-hitter when FredSchulte singled with one out in the 7th inning. Cleveland had a total of 10hits for the game. Earl Whitehill(10-3) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.

Johnny Marcum (pictured) was on top of his game, blanking Chicago on just 3 hits as thePhiladelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 3 to 0 atShibe Park. Marcum(6-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for theChicago batters. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing hisERA drop from 4.83 to 4.32. Philadelphia rapped out 7 hits for theafternoon. The losing pitcher was Milt Gaston(4-5). 'He was moving it around andspotting it very well.' Jimmy Dykes said. Marcum pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'

He went 9 innings, surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks reducing his ERA from 5.18 to 4.61. Boston had a total of 7 hits for the game. Jim Weaver(1-4) suffered the loss. 'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Manalive, things were getting awfully grim,' noted Bill McKechnie. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!'

Ray Benge(7-6) ended up with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners, giving up 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inningscoring 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Gus Suhr kicked off the action when helaced a base-hit. Cookie Lavagetto came next and he slapped a one-base hit.Wally Roettger then hit a deep fly scoring a run. Tom Padden was up next andhe lined a base-hit. Waite Hoyt came to the plate and laced a single scoringthe final run of the inning. New York made it exciting in the 9th, but theywere unable to push the needed runs across. Martin had a big day at the plate. He tripled bringing in two baserunners inthe 4th inning, cracked a solo homerun (his 3rd of the season) in the 6thinning and doubled knocking in a run in the 8th inning. St. Louis finishedwith 15 hits in the victory. Dean(5-7) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. George Darrow(0-6) wasgiven the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. St. Louis now has a record of 30-22. With the loss, the Philadelphia ballclub's record is 19-31.

Bobby Burke held Cleveland scoreless on just 2 hits at Griffith Stadium as theWashington Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians 3 to 0. Burke(2-2) was tremendous on the mound for Washington. He surrendered only 2hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.92 to 2.35.Washington had a total of 7 hits for the game. Lloyd Brown(3-4) was charged with the loss. Walter Johnson was obviouslyimpressed with the pitching of Burke, 'That guy made us look a little sillyout there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everythingwas working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out ofhis system.'

In the opener, Al Benton tossed a complete game. Benton(4-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much, just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.08 to 4.39. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Ted Lyons (2-6) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. 'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Jimmy Dykes said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

In the nightcap, the Athletics again nipped the White Sox 3 to 2. Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Dib Williams led off and he singled. Doc Cramer stepped upto the plate and he lined a base-hit, and an error was also committed, bringing in a run. Rabbit Warstler then hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago again threatened in the 9th, but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally. The winning pitcher was Bill Dietrich(4-1) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings.Dietrich got help from Bob Kline who earned his 3rd save. Whit Wyatt(3-2)was the loser. He gave up 8 hits and no walks in 8 innings. Jimmy Dykes was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

In an great finish the St. Louis Cardinals won in dramatic fashion over the slumping Boston Braves by a score of 3 to 2 at Sportsman's Park.

St. Louis won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs using 3hits. Frankie Frisch led off and he drew a walk. Joe Medwick was next and he delivered a single. Medwick took second on the throw. Rip Collins then drew a walk to load the bases. Spud Davis followed and he ripped a base-knock scoring two teammates. Buster Mills came to the plate and delivered a base-hit giving St. Louis the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. St. Louis rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. Flint Rhem(2-2) allowed no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Ed Brandt(3-7) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.
