First baseman Rip Collins had 4 hits and scored 3 times and Tex Carletonallowed Frankie Frisch to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at ForbesField where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the scoreof 9 to 3.

Carleton(5-3) earned his pay with a solid performance for St. Louis. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. St. Louis had 17 hits for theafternoon. Waite Hoyt(1-5) was given the loss in relief. With this win, St. Louis has a 23-19 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Pittsburgh has a record of 19-20 after the loss.

At the Polo Grounds the sizzling New York Giants outscored the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 1.

Mel Ott enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He smacked a three-run homer (his 11th of the season) in the 1st inning and tripled in the 7th inning. Philadelphia had 10 hits in the game while New York had 4, but New York had the more timely hits.

Watty Clark(2-1) (pictured) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 1 run. Dolf Luque got the save, his 3rd. Curt Davis (4-4) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up only 4 hits and 1 walk. New York won for the 7th straight time. Bill Terry held court after the contest, 'Everything is coming up aces right now. It is important for our team to ride this wave as long as we can. Every win is important.'



Reds Prevail in Bottom of 9th Over Cubbies

Center fielder Chick Hafey had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field as theCincinnati Reds won in their last at-bat beating the Chicago Cubs by thecount of 5 to 4 at Cincinnati's Crosley Field (pictured).

Cincinnati scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Sparky Adams stroked a base-hit. Tony Piet stepped up to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hafey then reached on an error. After another out, HarlinPool came up and he lashed a single giving Cincinnati the win much to thedelight of the home town crowd. For the game Cincinnati out-hit Chicago 13 to 7.


The win went to Joe Shaute (2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. PatMalone (4-4) was the loser. He allowed 13 hits and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings.


Dodgers Turn Up Heat on Braves' Pen in 8-3 Win
Taylor, Cucci each get 3 hits to power Bums as Leonard goes 5-0 on season

Third baseman Tony Cuccinello had 3 base hits and 3 RBI and Dutch Leonardpitched a complete game as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves by the score of 8 to 3 at Braves Field.

Brooklyn took the lead for good in the 6th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Sam Leslie initiated the scoring spurt whenhe slapped a base-hit. Len Koenecke came to the plate and drew a walk. Cuccinello then doubled, and an error was also committed, emptying the bases.

Brooklyn had 12 hits for the afternoon. Leonard(5-0), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Jumbo Jim Elliott(2-2) was charged with the loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks.

Tigers Complete Sweep, Win 7th Straight, in Chicago with 10-0 Win
Bridges dominates in complete game shutout

Tommy Bridges tossed a complete game shutout and Marv Owen homered and had 4 RBI at Comiskey Park as the seemingly unstoppable Detroit Tigers, running on all cylinders, ripped the Chicago White Sox by a large 10 to 0 margin.

The win marks the Tigers 7th straight victory.

The Chicago fans didn't appreciate the big day Owen had. He smashed a two-run homer (his 5th of the season) in the 7th inning and tripled plating two runs in the 9th inning. Detroit totaled 13 on the afternoon. Bridges (4-5) went the distance for the shutout. George Earnshaw(3-6) was charged with the loss. He was unable to control the Detroit offense and allowed 11 hits and 7 walks in 8 innings.


A's Find Way to Prevail Over Hot Yankees, Gomez
Higgins' three run blast shows up Gehrig, Foxx

Both Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx went yard as they vie for the home run title this year, but it was Pinky Higgins 3 run homer, only his 4th this year, that proved the difference in the game as the A's defeated the high flying (11-2 in last two weeks).

Sugar Cain tossed a complete game at Shibe Park where the Philadelphia Athletics beat the New York Yankees 4 to 2. Philadelphia did all the necessary damage in the 4th inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Higgins' three-run homer. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. Cain (5-4) allowed 2 runs on the game. Lefty Gomez (6-4) took the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.



Tribe Defeats Browns Behind Strong Pitching
Hilderand yields 1 earned run in 6-3 victory

Earl Averill left the yard as the Cleveland Indians topped the St. Louis Browns by a score of 6 to 3 at Sportsman's Park.

Oral Hildebrand (pictured)(3-4) gave a fine effort for Cleveland. He went 8 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 7 walks lowering his ERA from 5.63 to 4.97.

Cleveland out-hit St. Louis for the game, 13 hits to 5. Mel Harder got the save, his 2nd. Bump Hadley(2-5) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.


Nats Comeback for Extra Inning Win
Two run 10th inning give home team dramatic win

The Washington Nationals nipped the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings 5 to 4 atGriffith Stadium in a hard fought contest. Nats pitcher Earl Whitehill was going for his 9th win, but it was not to be as he hit the showers before its completion.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Washington won the hard fought contest inthe 10th inning. Fred Schulte led off and he slapped a one-base hit. Dave Harris next to the plate and he doubled driving in a run. After an out was recorded, Moe Berg (pictured) stepped in and he hit a single giving Washington thevictory as 11,025 happy fans celebrated wildly.

The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Alex McColl (3-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Rube Walberg(3-1) was given the loss in relief. Washington scored big getting 4 runs off him in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Dizzy Dean shutout Pittsburgh while allowing the St. Louis bullpen a day-off at Forbes Field where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7to 0. Dean(3-6) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed only 6 hits and3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.72 to 3.32. St. Louis rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon. Red Lucas (2-4) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings of work.








Giants Defeat Phils Despite Being Outhit

Third baseman Blondy Ryan had 2 base hits at Polo Grounds as the sizzling NewYork Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 4 to 1.


Fred Fitzsimmons(7-3) gave a fine effort for New York. He allowed 11 hits and1 walk in 7 innings lowering his ERA to 2.44. Despite losing, Philadelphia out-hit New York 13 to 8. The loss was charged to Phil Collins(4-4). With the win, New York continued their winning ways; their streak now stands at 7 games and counting.

Right fielder Chuck Klein had 2 base hits as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 3 at Crosley Field.

Bud Tinning(4-1) had a fairly solid outing. He went 7 and 2/3 innings, surrendering 11 hits and 5 walks. Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th,but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Tinning got help from Bill Lee who earned his 1st save. The loss was charge to Ted Kleinhans(0-1).

'We won because we did the little things right,' Cubs manager Charlie Grimm said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games, we don't make mistakes.'




Braves Top Dodgers Again, 5-3

Fred Frankhouse went the distance as the Boston Braves defeated the reeling Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 5 to 3 at Braves Field. Frankhouse(4-5) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 4 hits and 4 walks in9 innings. Brooklyn proved to be no trouble in the 9th. The loss was charged to Boom-Boom Beck(2-3). He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Detroit took the lead for keeps in the 7th inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Firpo Marberry (3-4) was the winner allowing 7 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Luke Hamlin earned his 1st save. Milt Gaston(3-3) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. 'You have to give Chicago credit, they fought us tough to the end' MickeyCochrane said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled outthe victory.'

12,369 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at the end of the first game. The Boston Red Sox won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7. The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. Finally, Boston pulled the game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Rick Ferrell lined a single, and an error was also committed. Lyn Lary came to the plateand drew a walk. Dusty Cooke then would ground out scoring the run. Boston rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Joe Mulligan(1-0) who went 4 innings allowing 4 runs.Rube Walberg got the save, his 1st. Jack Russell(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

In the second game, Bobby Burke was able to finish what he started and was credited with acomplete game and Buddy Myer had 4 hits as the Washington Nationals beat theBoston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 5. The game started off with Washington taking the lead in the first when theyscored 3 runs on 4 hits. Washington managed 13 in their victory. The victory was credited to Burke(1-2) who went the distance, allowing 5 runs.The losing pitcher was Johnny Welch(3-1). He struggled with his control, issuing 9 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

He clubbed a three-run home run in the1st inning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 4th of theseason) in the 7th inning.

Boston finished with 13 hits in the victory. The winning pitcher was Jumbo Jim Elliott(2-1) who allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. Les Munns(1-1) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10hits and 5 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

The crucial at-bat was provided by ErnieLombardi who thrilled the crowd when he doubled plating two runs.

Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6 different innings was still not enough for Chicago to come away with the victory. Don Brennan (3-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Jim Weaver (0-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed Cincinnati 8 runs in 7 innings of work.

Hubbell(10-1) was virtually untouchable. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory. George Darrow(0-3) was given the loss.

After an out was recorded, Paul Waner started the rally when he stroked a base-hit. Waner stole second with some aggressive base running.Pie Traynor then lined a single. Arky Vaughan stepped in and he lashed asingle driving in a run. After another out, Lavagetto stepped up to theplate and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. June 1st, 1934 - How're They Doin'? - Lefty Grove

In 1934, Grove suffered the only "off year" during his career. He had just joined the Red Sox, having spent his entire career to date (1925-1933) with the A's. During the spring of 1934, the Red Sox discovered Grove had a sore arm that would haunt him for the season. After 1934, Grove returned to dominant form, and pitched for Boston until 1941.
