In the opener, Lon Warneke allowed only 2 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard for Pittsburgh as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 9 to 0 at Wrigley Field. Chuck Klein provided much of the offense. He tripled scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 5th inning and hit a single in the 6th inning. Chicago had 13 hits for the afternoon. It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Warneke(8-1). Heinie Meine(2-1) was given the loss.


Catcher Earl Grace went yard and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over the Cubs, 10 to 6, in the second game. Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning when they scored 5 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Lloyd Waner who quieted the home crowd when he tripled clearing all three ducks off the pond. Pittsburgh rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Bill Harris(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Charlie Root(2-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'The only way this one could have been better', said Harris, 'was if we hadplayed it at home.'

Ethan Allen (pictured) had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Cy Moore shut out Boston while allowing the Philadelphia bullpen a day-off at Braves Field as the Philadelphia Phillies, running on all cylinders, ripped the Boston Braves by a large 11 to 0 margin in the opening game. Allen had a big day with his bat. He doubled in the 1st inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 9th inning. Philadelphia had 12 hits for the afternoon. Moore(1-3) was credited with the shutout. Ed Brandt(3-5) was given the loss.

In the second game, Allen had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies staged a dramatic comeback over the Boston Braves by a score of 6 to 5. Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when theyscored 4 runs on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Allen who silenced the stadium when he doubled which was good for two runs. The win went to Cy Malis(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.


Bob Brown(1-2)was the loser in relief. Brown was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down and our fans. One minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's overwith! I just hope I get a chance to redeem myself real soon!

Bill Terry had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Ebbetts Field where the New York Giantsbeat the Brooklyn Dodgers 8 to 3. Watty Clark(1-1) pitched a fine game. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings improving his ERA from 2.70 to 1.59. New York had 14 hits overall, while Brooklyn had 9. Clark got help from Dolf Luque who was credited with his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Van Lingle Mungo(4-7). He surrendered 12 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.


In a tight second game the Giants prevailed 8 to 6. Joe Bowman(1-1) struggled at times, but was good enough to get the victory. He gave up 14 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Bowman was helped out by Slick Castleman who recorded his 1st save. Ray Lucas(0-1) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings. New York continued their winning ways improving their record to a leagueleading 27-13. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's record is 18-18.

Jim Bottomley had 3 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. LouisCardinals in 10 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Crosley Field in the opener.


The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Cincinnati ended up winning it in the 10th inning. Jake Flowers came to the plate and stroked a bases loaded single, giving Cincinnati the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. The victory was credited to Ray Kolp(2-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Bill Walker(1-2) was the loser in relief. The win by Cincinnati was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. Now their seasonal record improves to 10-23.

In the second game, Tex Carleton tossed a shutout as the Cardinals beat the Reds 5 to 0. Carleton(4-3) put on a good performance. He gave up just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.78 to 3.23. St. Louis finished with 13 hits in the victory. Tony Freitas(0-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 12 hits and no walks in 7 and1/3 innings.

Gee Walker had 3 base hits and Tommy Bridges pitched a complete game at Sportsman's Park where the Detroit Tigers beat the St. Louis Browns by the score of 5 to 4. Detroit drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning plating an isolated run using 3 hits. Detroit managed 11 in their victory. The victory went to Bridges(3-5) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. The loss was charged to Dick Coffman(0-4). He gave up 5 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Bridges, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

In a thriller the Detroit Tigers staged a dramatic comeback then held on to win over the St. Louis Browns by a score of 8 to 7 in the second game. Detroit came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Goose Goslin started the rally when he reached on an error. Jo-Jo White stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a single scoring a run. One out later, Billy Rogell came up andhe doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Detroit and St. Louis eachfinished the afternoon with 13 hits. Elden Auker (pictured) (5-2) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings.

Ed Wells(1-5) was the losing pitcher in relief. It was a tough loss for him ashe did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work. 'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Wells said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'

In a good matchup it was the Philadelphia Athletics 4, the Boston Red Sox 2 in10 innings at Shibe Park in the first game of their double header. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Philadelphia won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning when Jimmie Foxx then belted athree-run homer (his 14th of the season) making Philadelphia the winners. Bob Kline(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Fritz Ostermueller(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 3 walks.

Boston came back in the second game with a narrow victory. Center fielder Dusty Cooke had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Gordon Rhodes was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics 4 to 3. Boston had the game winning rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. The win was credited to Rhodes (4-6) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs. Joe Cascarella(4-1) took the loss.

Monte Pearson pitched a complete game at League Park where the ClevelandIndians beat the Chicago White Sox by the score of 7 to 2 in the first game of a double header. Cleveland took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The win was credited to Pearson(5-3) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.George Earnshaw (3-5) was the loser.

In the second game, Willis Hudlin pitched a complete game as the Indians outscored the White Sox 9 to 3. Cleveland tallied 4 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 5 base hits. That was all the runs Hudlin(3-4) needed. Les Tietje(1-3) took the loss. He was unable to control the Cleveland offense and allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

In the first game, Lefty Gomez went the distance as the New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 3 to 1 at Yankee Stadium. New York set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. The victory was credited to Gomez (6-3) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.The loss was charged to Earl Whitehill (8-2).

In the night cap, Lou Gehrig cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Yankees beat the Nationals 7 to 3. That early run support was enough for Johnny Murphy(3-2) and New York. Burleigh Grimes was credited with his 1st save. Lefty Stewart(2-5) was given the loss. He was unable to control the New York offense and allowed 14 hitsand 5 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

AL Player of the Week - Connie Mack

This week's AL "Player" is actually one of its leading executives - the A's legendary owner/manager Connie Mack.

Born Cornelius Alexander McGullicuddy, Mack played professional baseball (various NL teams between 1886 and 1896), but is best known for his ownership of, and his 50 years of managing the Philadelphia A's from 1901 - 1950.

During his tenure, Mack's A's would win 5 World Series (1910-1911, 1913, 1929-1930) and nine pennants. Reflecting the team's precarious finances and its frequent need to sell off its best players after championships, the A's also finished in the bottom of the league 17 times. Beginning in 1934, the A's finished in the "lower division" (i.e. bottom half) of the league every year but 1948 when they finished 4th. Between 1934 and 1950 they finished 7th or 8th 12 times. Accordingly, Mack has the record for both most wins and most losses as a manager.

"Mr. Mack," as he was universally known, was best known for wearing street attire (i.e., suit, starched shirt with a wing collar and straw hat or fedora) in the dugout. This attire prevented him from actually walking out onto the field during games. Instead, he would use his scorecard to make gestures, pointing to spots on the field he wanted covered during shifts, etc.

One interesting story that Mack related to sportswriter Red Smith in a 1944 Baseball Digest article was about the time he passed on Babe Ruth. He had the chance, he told Barber, to essentially get Ruth for nothing (the franchise never had money to purchase players), but he told Jack Dunn, the Baltimore owner, to sell Ruth instead (which he did to Boston for $6,000). Mack explained to Smith "Jack didn't habe any money in these days, and we didn't either. I remember I told him, 'no, you keep those fellows Jack and sell 'em where you can get some money. You could use it as well as I.'"

Mack was inducted into the Hall of Fame midway through his career in 1937. No other manager would be inducted into the Hall until 1975 (Bucky Harris).

Neitherteam managed to score after the 4th inning. Fitzsimmons(6-3) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. RayBenge(5-4) was tagged with the loss. 'I thought it was my best performancein a long time,' said Fitzsimmons. 'I had good command early in the game. Ihad my control and composure and everything went well.'

Charlie Gehringer connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Browns by a score of 8 to 7 at Sportsman'sPark.


Gehringer had a big day at the plate. He doubled resulting in a run in the 1st inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 3rd inning and delivered a one-base hit in the 5th inning. Both teams ended up with 11on the afternoon.


Elden Auker (4-2) went 5 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. GeorgeBlaeholder(2-5) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 6 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.

Right fielder Stan "Frenchy" Bordagaray (pictured) had 4 hits and 3 RBI at League Park as the Chicago White Sox won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the ClevelandIndians by the count of 8 to 6.

Chicago had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 4 hits. Zeke Bonura opened up the inning nicely when he delivered a base-hit. Al Simmons stepped up to the plate and he delivered a single. Luke Appling then drew a walk to load the bases. Jimmy Dykes came up and he stroked a single, scoring two baserunners. After an out was recorded, Ed Madjeski stepped in and he lined a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Clevelandwent down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

Whit Wyatt(3-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Ralph Winegarner(0-1) was the loser in relief. Dykes was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute -SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!'

Roy Johnson had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Johnny Welch completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Boston Red Sox topped the Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 3 to 1 at Shibe Park. Boston set the tone of the game in the first inning, scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits. Boston banged out 14 on the afternoon. Welch (3-0) allowed 1 run on the game. The losing pitcher was Sugar Cain(4-4). He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.

Billy Rogell - Detroit - Shortstop

Tiger of the Week: Billy Rogell

William George "Billy" Rogell (BA49) was Detroit's shortstop for many years and part of the awesome infield of Greenberg, Gehringer, Rogell and Owen.

Rogell's parents died when he was young, and he grew up with his older sister in Chicago. A high school dropout, Rogell went to work at 13 to help support his younger brothers. He did play some semi-pro ball as a teenager, and some players who had played major league baseball encouraged him to pursue it.

He began his career in Boston (AL) but played most of his 16 years (1925-1940) in Detroit. In 1929, Rogell was back in the minor leagues and had a number of offers from major league clubs, including the Yankees, but he chose Detroit.

Rogell was a switch hitter with a penchant for drawing walks. According to The Detroit Tigers Encyclopedia, he foreshadowed the modern shortstop who is expected to contribute with his bat in addition to his glove. In the field, he "didn't have tremendous range" but "got the job done." BJBA He and Gehringer led the league twice in double plays and Rogell led the league in fielding percentage from 1935-1937 in his position.

Rogell was a tough player by today's standards. He played the last month of 1934 and the World Series in an ankle cast. He also tussled with the Yankees' Ben Chapman after Chapman spiked Charlie Gehringer.

Rogell was popular with the fans. After his baseball career, Rogell successfully entered the political arena, serving on the Detroit City Council from 1942 to 1980. He used his position and connections to provide assistance to many former baseball players down on their luck after their careers had ended. BJBA.
