Right fielder Ed Coleman left the yard and had 3 RBI at Navin Field as thePhiladelphia Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 6 to 4. Detroit fell behind quickly as the Philadelphia offense came through in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Coleman who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he smashed a two-run homer (his 2nd of the season).

Detroit had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Johnny Marcum(4-2) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Marcum was helped out by Bob Kline who recorded his 2nd save.

The losing pitcher was Firpo Marberry(2-4). Philadelphia scored big getting 5 runs off him in 3 innings. Tigers second baseman Charlie Gehringer was especially disappointed in his two errors, which cost it two unearned runs. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Gehringer. 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'

Monte Weaver allowed only 4 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard for St. Louis as the Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Browns in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 0 at Sportsman's Park.

Neither team managed to score in the first nine innings. Washington won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Joe Cronin kicked off the action when he banged out a single. Fred Schulte came next and he slapped a single. Schulte took second on the throw. John Stone then drew a walk to load thebases. After an out was recorded, Eddie Phillips stepped in and he drew awalk resulting in a run. One out later, Buddy Myer stepped up to the plateand he drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. Washington finishedwith just 6 hits in the victory.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Weaver (3-4). Dick Coffman(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He allowed just 6 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Browns manager Rogers Hornsby was obviously impressed with the pitching of Weaver, 'That guymade us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got thatkinda performance out of his system.' Nationals player manager Cronin said 'Weaver was a one man show out there - he bailed us out.'

Lefty Gomez pitched a complete game as the New York Yankees outscored theChicago White Sox 4 to 3. New York had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 3rd inning. That was all the offense they were to need. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

The winning pitcher was Gomez(5-3) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Milt Gaston(3-2) was the loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 9 hits in 9 innings.

The New York ballclub's record now stands at 15-16. With the loss, Chicago has a record of 3-7 lately, 13-16 overall.

Second baseman Frankie Frisch had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Ebbetts Field as the St.Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 5 to 3.


Jim Mooney(2-1) had a solid outing for St. Louis. He went 7 innings, surrendering 7 hits and 5 walks lowering his ERA from 3.95 to 3.48. Overall, St. Louis out-hit Brooklyn 13 to 8. Jesse Haines earned his 4th save.


Ray Benge(5-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 13 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without hisbest stuff,' Frisch said after the game. 'Mooney did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'

Heinie Meine completed the game without help from the bullpen at Braves Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Braves 2 to 1.

Meine(2-0) pitched well for Pittsburgh in their victory. He was reached for 8 hits and no walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.64 to 3.56. Boston threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally. Fred Frankhouse(2-5) was the loser. He allowed just 2 runs and 4 hits in 8 innings.

'Some losses are harder to take than others' Braves manager Bill McKechnie lamented after the game. 'This was one of the tough ones.'

Mickey Haslin had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Baker Bowl as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the reeling Cincinnati Reds 15 to 6. Philadelphia drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning when they scored 6 runs on 8 hits.

Philadelphia bats were very productive in the 1st inning when they had 6 runs on 8 hits and the 5th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 6 hits. Philadelphia ended up with 23 hits for the game while Cincinnati had 11. Phil Collins(4-3) allowed 6 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Benny Frey(0-4) took the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 6 hits in 2/3 of an inning.


Giants Defeat Cubs 3-2 at Polo Grounds

Center fielder George Watkins touched them all as the sizzling New York Giantswon at Polo Grounds in dramatic fashion over the Chicago Cubs, the final score, 3 to 2.

New York won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Watkins lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 1st of the season) giving New York the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.

New York had 7 hits for the afternoon. The winning pitcher was Jack Salveson (3-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of aninning. Pat Malone(4-3) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Texas Ranger Hunts Down, Kills Notorious Bank Robbers

Bonnie and Clyde shot dead in ambush by law enforcement

The notiorious bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were killed today as law enforcement officials from Texas and Louisiana confronted them near their hidout in Bienville Parish, LA.

The hunt and raid was conducted by former Texas Ranger Frank A. Hamer, an expert manhunter. Since Barrow masterminded an escape from prison, during which a guard was killed, he has been on the run, avoiding state officials by moving from state to state. Barrow and another member of the gang, Henry Methvin, also murdered two Texas Highway Patrolmen during their flight.

Officials are unclear on whether Barrow or Parker were ordered to surrender by police prior to shots being fired.

Glove Affairs is a short, but fairly wide ranging look at the baseball glove. It contains the history of the evolution of gloves, stories about players and their relationships to their gloves and a look at the glove repair and collecting industries. For instance, players generally left their mitts on the field when their team was at bat until the mid 50s. It also contains information about purchasing one, breaking it in and maintaining it. Finally, it provides a good overview of how glove companies do business with the players who wear and sometimes endorse them. In short, there's something for nearly everyone.

I say nearly because one area where the book falls down is its discussion of the baseball glove industry. While it has a good overview of how the glove emerged from little more than padding for a bare hand to the coming of the Wilson A2000 in the late 50s (still more or less the "modern" glove), it contains very little about the individual companies and the various models they sold. For instance, it would be of little use to a collector as it mentions only a few models. We're never told, for instance, what would make a player choose one make or model rather than another, or which are of most interest to collectors and why, although the book does have a short chapter on collecting. The book does, however, contain a good deal of what players look for in terms of attributes and which positions warrant various design aspects.

If you're not familiar with development, legends and lore of the baseball glove, it's the ideal place to start. In addition, it has plenty of useful information regarding maintaining and repairing your own glove. At 150 pages (including index), with numerous pictures and a wide spread type face, its a quick read. Its most glaring omission is the lack of a bibliography or footnotes, making it difficult to know whether to find further information on a topic.

The Detroit bats were silent most of the afternoon as the Philadelphia A's quietly built a 3-0 lead going into the 7th inning stretch. Roy Mahaffey, who had kept the Tigers at bay through 6, was done and hit the showers, leaving the bullpen to mop up.


Then, like the sound of guns erupting on a distant battlefield, the Tigers' bats came alive, pounding A's reliever Al Benton mercelessly. Benton was tagged for 10 runs before giving way after only a single out.


Tigers outfielder Goose Goslin went 3 for 5, driving in 2 and scoring 3 himself. Third sacker Marv Owen also had a big day at the plate. He banged out a single in the 7thinning and hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his 3rd ofthe season) in the 7th inning. Detroit finished with 10 hits in the victory. Elden Auker(3-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. AlBenton(2-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 10 runs and 5 hitsin 1/3 of an inning.

Bobo Newsom allowed Rogers Hornsby to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and right fielder Earl Clark had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis Browns topped the Washington Nationals by a score of 7 to 4 at Sportsman'sPark.


St. Louis had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning with thehelp of 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rollie Hemsley whoelicited a roar from the hometown fans when he doubled bringing in twobaserunners. St. Louis finished with 11 hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Newsom(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 4 runs.Lefty Stewart(2-4) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks in 7innings.

Red Ruffing pitched a complete game at Comiskey Park as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox by the count of 6 to 2. New York set the tone of the game in the first inning plating an isolated run, using 2 hits. New York had a total of 15 hits for the game.

The Babe, who has been in a funk this year, had three hits, raising his batting average to .240. Ruffing (4-2) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. The loss was charged to Ted Lyons(1-2). He was touched for 15 hits and 5 walks in 8 and1/3 innings.

Joe Vosmik continued his tremendous season this afternoon. He jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI while Tribe hurler Mel Harder was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game, as the Cleveland Indians outscored the Boston Red Sox 7 to 1.

Cleveland drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning, plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Cleveland banged out 13 on the afternoon. Harder(5-1) lasted until the end, allowing 1 run for the win. Lefty Grove (2-1)took the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 13 hits and no walks.

In a close game it was the seemingly unstoppable New York Giants 6, the St.Louis Cardinals 4 at the Polo Grounds.


The Giants received strong pitching performances from starter Al Smith (pictured) and Fred Fitzsimmons,(5-3) who won the game with a masterful relief performance, replacing Hi Bell off whom the Cards had begun to hit. Fitzsimmons performed flawlessly in relief in his 1 and 1/3 innings.


New York managed 10 hits in their victory. Flint Rhem(1-2) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.

Birkofer(3-3) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.42 to 3.94. Pittsburgh had a total of 14 hits for the game. George Darrow(0-2) was given the loss. With this win, Pittsburgh has a 14-13record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, Philadelphia has a record of 4-6 lately, 12-16 overall.

At Braves Field, the Boston fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Huck Betts(2-4) finally bested his Cincinnati opposite, Paul Derringer (3-2), by the score of 3 to 1.


Boston did all of its offensive work in the 4th inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Pinky Whitney who came through for the home fans when he banged out a single scoring two base runners. Boston had only 6 hits for the game.

Betts got relief help from Tom Zachary who gained credit for his 1st save.The loss was charged to Derringer. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk.

Center fielder Kiki Cuyler connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Ebbetts Field as the Chicago Cubs pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 7 to 6.

Chicago came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Chuck Klein kicked off the action when he tripled. Cuyler was next to the plate and he was walked intentionally. Riggs Stephenson then stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run. Cubs skipper Charlie Grimm stepped in and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning.

Despite losing, Brooklyn out-hit Chicago 13 to 10. The winning pitcher was Pat Malone (4-2) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 2/3innings. Boom-Boom Beck(2-2) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Washington had 9 hits for the afternoon. Tommy Bridges(1-5) absorbed the loss. The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 18-13. With the loss, Detroit has a record of 4-6 lately, 15-14 overall.

Cascarella(3-0) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 9 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.44. Philadelphia banged out 17 on theafternoon. Ivy Andrews(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around pretty good,giving up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Cascarella didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviouslysurprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn'tthink I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'

Ben Chapman lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI as the New YorkYankees rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Cleveland Indians,8 to 5.

New York had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 4 runnerson 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Chapman who silenced League Park as he doubled emptying the bases. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory. Johnny Murphy(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 5 runs. Harry Smythe earned the save, his 1st. Belve Bean(1-1) absorbed theloss in relief. New York scored big getting 4 runs off him in 3 and 2/3innings.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Chapman said. 'If you just keep trying good things can happen!'

Boston fell behind quickly as the Chicago offense came through in the firstinning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, MuleHaas was the sparkplug when he drew a walk. Bonura next to the plate and heslapped a base-hit. Al Simmons then lashed a single bringing in a run.Simmons took second on the throw. Luke Appling was up next and he hit aone-base hit driving home another two teammates. Chicago rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Sam Jones(2-4) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4runs. Les Tietje was credited with his 2nd save. Fritz Ostermueller(1-3) wasthe loser. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings.
