Giants Hold On In Shutout With CardsHome team nearly blows 12-5 lead

Giants manager and first baseman Bill Terry (pictured) connected with a 'big fly' and had 7 RBI at the Polo Grounds as the New York Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 12 to 11.
Terry was in a groove all day. He delivered a one-base hit scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning, smacked a three-run homer (his 3rd of theseason) in the 7th inning and slapped a base-hit plating two runs in the 8th inning. St. Louis had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
The victory was credited to Fred Fitzsimmons (4-3) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,allowing 3 runs. Fitzsimmons got help from Hi Bell who earned his 3rd save. Flint Rhem(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. Noting the 3 unearned runs that cost the Cards the game, manager Frankie Frisch stated 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals...we lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.'

Frank Pearce tossed a complete game shutout as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to 0 at the Baker Bowl. Pearce(1-0) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 4 walks reducing his ERA from 5.79 to 1.98.
Philadelphia rapped out 12 hits for the afternoon. Larry French (3-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

The Chicago Cubs edged the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbetts Field by the score of 7 to 6.
Chicago brought 5 runs across the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Charlie Grimm who quieted the crowd when he lined a base-hit bringing in two baserunners. Brooklyn had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Bill Lee(3-1) allowed 6 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory.Lee was helped out by Dick Ward who recorded his 1st save. Art Herring(1-1)suffered the loss. He struggled with his control issuing 9 walks in 6innings. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Casey Stengel 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'

John Stone had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Earl Whitehill pitched a complete game as the Washington Nationals defeated the Detroit Tigers 4 to 2 at Navin Field. Whitehill (7-1) had a solid outing for Washington. He surrendered 9 hits and 2walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.64 to 3.42. The Detroit batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. Firpo Marberry(2-3) took the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 5 walks in 6 and1/3 innings.

Shortstop Eric McNair ripped a bases loaded blast at Sportsman's Park as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns in 12 innings 8 to 7.
The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. Philadelphia won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Rabbit Warstler slapped a one-basehit. After an out was recorded, Bob Johnson stepped up to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. Jimmie Foxx then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Ed Coleman came up and he hit a deep fly scoring the run.
Philadelphia won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 16 hits to 9. Al Benton(3-1) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Bill McAfee(0-1)was hit with the loss in relief. His ERA increased from 3.48 to 3.97 as he allowed 1 run in 1 inning. Philadelphia now has a record of a league leading 18-11. With the loss St. Louis now has a record of 8-18, worst in the league.

Lou Gehrig went deep and had 4 RBI as the New York Yankees topped theCleveland Indians by a score of 9 to 4 at League Park.
New York came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 5 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Gehrig who silenced League Parkas he delivered a single bringing in two baserunners. New York had 10 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Jimmie Deshong(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Willis Hudlin(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 2 walks.

Carl Hubbell (pictured) blanked St. Louis in a very well-pitched complete game and Mel Ott homered and had 2 RBI as the New York Giants outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 2 to 0. Hubbell (8-0) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings allowing 10 hits and no walks. Although they lost, St. Louis did out-hit New York 10 to 5. Dizzy Dean(2-6) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered only 2 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.

Schoolboy Rowe was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Detroit Tigers won a dandy at Navin Field over the Washington Nationals, 4 to 3.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. Frank Doljack (pictured) laced a base-hit to spark the inning. Two outs later Charlie Gehringer came up and he lined a one-base hit. Billy Rogell then laced a single making Detroit the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Detroit finished with 13 hits in the victory.
Rowe(4-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Bobby Burke(0-2) was the loser. He was knocked around by Detroit, allowing 13 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. 'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought itwas nothing.' Rowe said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put theball where I wanted it.

Center fielder Sammy West (pictured) hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Browns beat the Philadelphia Athletics by the count of 15 to 6. West really 'lit it up' for St. Louis. He cracked a two-run shot (his 3rd ofthe season) in the 1st inning, ripped a base-knock in the 3rd inning, tripled scoring a run in the 5th inning, doubled plating a run in the 6th inning andl aced a base-hit in the 7th inning. St. Louis lit up the scoreboard in the 6th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits.
St. Louis out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 19 hits to 16. The win was credited to George Blaeholder (2-3) who went 8 and 2/3 inningsallowing 6 runs. Roy Mahaffey (0-3) was the loser. By giving up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings his ERA increased from 5.40 to 5.77.

Earl Averill (pictured) rocketed 3 home runs and had 9 RBI and Monte Pearson pitched a complete game as the Cleveland Indians crushed the New York Yankees 21 to4.
Averill was spectacular at the plate. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 3rd inning, stroked a base-hit in the 5th inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 6th inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning. Cleveland bats were hot in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits and the 6th inning with 5 runs on 6 hits. The Cleveland offense man-handled the New York pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings. The victory went to Pearson (3-3) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. DannyMacfayden(1-4) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Averill said. 'We played well together as a team.'
