Cubbies Defeat Giants in 14 Inning Thriller!!!
Malone throws 5 scoreless innings in relief

After 7 1/2 innings, this afternoon's game between the league leading Cubs and hotly pursuing Giants appeared to be a well pitched 2-2 duel. Then, the hitters took over, scoring 8 runs to leave the game deadlocked at 6 after 9. The deadlock was not broken until the bottom of the 14th inning, when Cubs catcher decided it with a solo home run.

There were many clutch moments as the teams battled back and forth all day. The Giants tied the game in the top of the 8th with a leadoff homer by Gus Mancuso. The Cubs appeared to take a decisive 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th as Chuck Klein blasted a two run homer. However, the Giants responded in the top of the 9th with a 4 run rally, capped by a 3 run pinch hit homer by George Grantham to give New York a 6-4 lead going into the the bottom of the 9th.

The Cubs were down to their final out in the 9th, with a runner on second, when manager Charlie Grimm called on pinch hitter Babe Herman. Herman drew a walk and Stan Hack followed to load the bases with two outs. Woody English came up big in the clutch with a two run single to tie the game once again at 6-6.

4 and a half scoreless innings followed. Perce (Pat) Malone (pictured) then stepped into the breach for Chicago, holding the hot hitting Giants through 5 at bats until the Cubs finally broke through with Hartnett's homer. Hartnett also blocked a run in the top of the 4th. Still, Charlie Grimm couldn't stop talking about Malone's sterling performace. 'Bottom line is, this guy kept us in the game until we could win it. I didn't think anyone could stop New York after they scored 5 runs in the last two innings.'

Vic Sorrell completed the game without help from the bullpen at GriffithStadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 8 to 1. Sorrell (2-2) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings, improving his ERA from 5.68 to 4.46. Detroit banged out 16 on the afternoon. General Crowder (0-2) was charged with the loss. Detroit now has a record of 12-11. Washington has a record of 15-10 after the loss.



Red Sox Win Crucial Game at Home Against White Sox

Hank Johnson completed the game without help from the bullpen at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox by the score of 11 to 3. Billy Werber had a big day at the plate. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled in the 6th inning. Both teams totaled 11 on the afternoon. Johnson(1-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. George Earnshaw (2-3) took the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

NL "Player" of the Week - Branch Rickey

(Ed note: this week, as we will in the future, we look at the important "business side" of baseball by pofiling one of the game's most important non-players)

Wesley "Branch" Rickey began his career in major league baseball as a player with the St. Louis Browns and the New York Highlanders as the Yankees were then called, but he is best known one of the greatest executives and innovators the game has ever seen.

Although Rickey is best known for his hiring of Jackie Robinson and demolishing baseball's color line, this was only one in a long string of bold, "outside the box" Rickey innovations that marked his career from his time coaching baseball at his alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan University. Rickey would go on to earn a law degree (and also coach baseball) at the University of Michigan after his brief stint in the major leagues.

Although many associate Rickey with the Brooklyn Dodgers, most of his long career was spent in St. Louis, first with Browns from 1913 to 1916 and then with the Cardinals from 1917 to 1942. It was his time with the Cardinals that Rickey developed the idea for a system where the Cardinals would recruit raw talent via tryouts and then maintain the Cardinal ties of players with promise via the development of a web of minor league teams either owned by the Cardinals or with some legal requierment to sell their contracts only to the Cardinals. This system became known as the "farm system" and led to serious clashes between Rickey and Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who believed every professional team's obligations should be to win ball games rather than supply a parent organization with talent.

Rickey was a devout Methodist, who was famous for observing the sabbath as a player, manager and executive. Among his most important contributions to the game after his time in St. Louis and Brooklyn were signing Roberto Clemente during a brief stint with Pittsburgh, and being the motivating force behind baseball's expansion in the 1960s after Rickey and others tried to organize a new major league, the "Continental League" (as it would have teams thoughout North America, including Canada) in 1959. The league disbanded without playing a game, but only after the Major Leagues had agreed to expand.

Development of the farm system, integration and expansion were the three most profound of Rickey's innovations. Others included the "daylight play" (whereby pitchers turn and throw to second base when they can see "daylight"between the baserunner and the shortstop covering), using a shotputting guard to correct overstriding by hitters, and the use of bands to help pitchers target their pitches. Rickey was at heart a teacher and coach, known for his power to inspire and motivate players and others in his many causes.

Rickey had a reputation for being tight with players' salaries despite his own relatively lavish compensation. It is hard to determine whether Rickey's teams were paid less than others during an era (1920s through 1950s) when baseball did not have the money it has now. Rickey always pointed to the enormous amounts of money his teams spent on the farm system, and in his elaborate preperation to integrate baseball, which was a well thought out, developed campaign designed to counter deep seated prejudices among enough of the public that many owners maintained the "gentleman's agreement" out of fear that many whites would not watch an integrated sport. Also, Rickey was forever helping out former players after their baseball careers ended. At the end of the day, the fierce loyalty shown him by former players and employees is evidence that he was, all things considered, good to work for.

Rickey was an innovative conservative. His temperment and ends were essentially conservative, yet he did not adhere to tradition in his means. Rickey believed deeply that the reserve clause and the antitrust exemption that enabled it were essential to baseball's well being. He was also deeply involved in Republican party politics, served in the army during World War I, led bond drives in World War II and was forever supporting various fraternal and charitable causes.

Rickey was named a "Contributor" by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.

One run was the difference at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 3. Don Brennan (pictured) (2-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 6 innings, surrendering 6 hits and 5 walks. Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Paul Derringer recorded the save, his 2nd. Phil Collins (2-3) was the losing pitcher. 'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Jimmie Wilson said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'



Cubs Nick Giants with 4-3 Win at Wrigley
Camilli, Hack lead Bruins hitters in key victory

The Giants were looking to close the Cubs NL lead to half a game. Instead, they wound up losing ground in a close fought battle this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

New York was unable to recover after Chicago went ahead in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring one runner using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Gabby Hartnett smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 6th of the season). Bud Tinning pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save. Dolph Camilli added three hits, raising his batting average to .422. The win went to Guy Bush (5-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Hi Bell (0-1) was the loser. He was touched for 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Chicago has a league leading 17-8 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With this loss, New York has a 6-4 record of late, 14-10 overall.


Dodgers Rally for 9th Inning Win Against Dean, Cards

Dutch Leonard threw a complete game shutout and left fielder Buzz Boyle (pictured) had 3 base hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 0. All afternoon, fans watched a great pitching duel between Leonard and St. Louis ace Dizzy Dean.

With a tieless score going into the 9th, Brooklyn erupted with the with 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Lonny Frey kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Boyle next to the plate and he smacked a single. Len Koenecke was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Johnny Frederick was up next and he tripled knocking home two runners. Sam Leslie stepped into the box and stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Brooklyn had 7 hits for the afternoon, but star sluggers Joe Medwick and Rip Collins were silent. Leonard (3-0) was credited with the shutout. Dizzy Dean (2-5) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.


Boston Rallies Past Pirates with 9th Inning Comeback

Shortstop Bill Urbanski (pictured) had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Forbes Field as the Boston Braves pulled off a dramatic come back, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 7 to 6. Boston won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Hal Lee initiated the scoring spurt when he lashed a single. Al Spohrer was the next batter, but he struck out. Randy Moore then doubled scoring a run. Urbanski came up and he hit a single scoring the final run of the inning. Boston had a total of13 hits for the game. Leo Mangum (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Bob Smith got the save, his 3rd. Waite Hoyt (0-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. Bucs manager George Gibson was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on usthis afternoon'

The Washington Nationals defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 4 at Griffith Stadium. Washington had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. Joe Kuhel (pictured) had three hits for Washington, but the highlight belonged to Eddie Phillips who came through for the home fans when he slapped a base-hit which was good for two runs. Washington finished with 13 hits while Detroit ended up with 9. Earl Whitehill (5-1) allowed 4 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jack Russell earned his 2nd save. Tommy Bridges(0-4) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Bob Johnson hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI, and Joe Cascarella (pictured) tossed a complete game at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns by the count of 7 to 2. Johnson enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He delivered a single in the 1st, inning, smacked a one-base hit scoring a run in the 2nd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 7th of the season) in the 6th inning. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Cascarella(2-0) who went the distance, allowing only 2 runs. Ivy Andrews(1-2) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Babe Ruth cracked 2 home runs and had 5 RBI and Lefty Gomez pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians9 to 3. Ruth had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, lifted one outof the park for a two run home run in the 3rd inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning. New York had a total of 10 hits for the game. Gomez(3-3), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Lloyd Brown(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 3 home runs in his 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Muddy Ruel had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10 to 7 at Fenway Park. 3 White Sox hitters got four hits, including second baseman Bob Boken (pictured), who just came from Washington on a trade.

Obviously without his best stuff, Milt Gaston (3-1) still hung on to pick up the win. He gave up 7 runs, 7 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Chicago out-hit Boston for the game, 18 hits to 8. Les Tietje was credited with his 1st save. Gordon Rhodes (2-4) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
